EmberC, even though the letter says the cord is free, it's actually included in the membership. So it's $60 for a cord. The medallion is an extra $15 and the "Leopold NSHSS official mascot, 10" stuffed lion" is $13. Cute doll.

I don't have problems with people making up societies and others joining them. And if it feels good to have your Leopold doll, go for it. I just don't appreciate the following line in the letter:

"As you prepare your university applications, you may list your selection and membership in the Society as one of your significant accomplishments. According to NSHSS scholarship recipient Rob Wheeler, "I would never have had the opportunity to study aeronautics and physics at a school like MIT, had it not been for NSHSS."

Now it may be that Mr. Wheeler received a substantial scholarship from NSHSSSSS, but placing that statement after the sentence related to applications implies that it helped with admission.

I actually think it would be interesting to follow the money trail of NSHSSSSSSS. Have any congressmen received donations? Have any universities received donations -- as in $5K for the endowment?

Pittsmom,
Actually, what happened is that I got on here and in my very first post pointed out the difference between a scholarship and an honor society. Apparently you and MommaJ had already appointed yourselves the "scam" experts, so then you both started personally attacking me. So I totally disagree that you treated my opinion with any respect at all. As soon as I said it wasn't a scam, you went back and forth making false claims and accusations about why I think it's okay to join a society for membership benefits. That's not respectful at all, so please get off your high horse. I've only been equally repectful of yours, after being personally attacked and accused over and over again about why I hold a different opinion. And again, MommaJ, read these words clearly, I'm not affiliated. If you want to start being respectful now, then stop making false accusations for one.

And now you're reprimanding me and saying you hope I AM affiliated because all my posts have been about NSHSS when, in one of my posts I addressed Golden Key, and you, Pittsmom got all bent out of shape because "We're not talking about Golden Key. We're talking about NSHSS." So I said, okay, let's talk about NSHSS. So pick a side.

And yes, SHE asked if I thought the names were made up. *I* said no, they're not. Then *you* said "WOW! You aren't in any way affiliated with NSHSS, yet you called the headquarters to ask if the reciepients are real or made up?" and that is what I was saying you need to read more carefully because your response didn't make sense to what I said.

Lottery, as taken directly from Doctionary.com:

1. a gambling game or method of raising money for some public charitable purpose, in which a large number of tickets are sold and a drawing is held for certain prizes.
2. any scheme for the distribution of prizes by chance.
3. any happening or process that is or appears to be determined by chance: to look upon life as a lottery.

In no way does this define a membership fee to an organization for member benefits. Again, I will state, if you're only concerned with scholarships, then apply to scholarships. No magic fairy is coming to your door with a pile of money just because you sent in your acceptance letter and $60.
You have a chance to apply for the scholarships offered directly by the society, this is true. But it is not the *only* benefit offered. I don't understand your complete disregard for the fact that all societies offer a number of other benefits besides scholarships.
Scholarships all have a selection process. The names of the winners are not picked out of a hat, and won through chance.

And yeah, MommaJ, she did a summer abroad with People to People. So I guess that makes us equal authorities on the subject. My point is that I'm sure the Eisenhower estate isn't suffering badly enough to be associated with a program that apparently you decided they're embarressed by for the perks, as you claimed.
And yes, honor societies do offer extracirricular activites. I don't know what's hard to understand about this simple fact, but earning a scholarship is not the only benefit of *any* honor society.
You are correct: BEING a member isn't an extracirricular activity, of course. I never said it was. I said they OFFER extracurricular activites for students. You both seem to be fixated on scholarships, in which case, go ahead and apply to a million scholarships. With or without membership. It can't be more simple than that.

Yes, there is a correlation with students who do extremely well in school, and those who spend time in scholastic environments. And yes, it is my firm opinion that being in an academic atmosphere, especially an encouraging and rewarding one, helps students do well. From your admitted decision to do no research before your previous posts, to the fact that your acronym spelled ASSS, which is not a word (perhaps Association for Scholastically Sensational and Exceptional Seniors (ASSES) or Association for Sensational Seniors (ASS) would have been better thought out) your "gimme a break" attitude toward scholastic involvement and achievement does not come as a surprise to me.

I can only speak from my own experience, and that's exactly where any of our opinions come from.
I was at the top of my classes throughout my entire school career. In elementary school I received top scores across the board, including scoring at the top of the nation in almost all categories upon graduation. I received an award for being the only student to never miss a day at the school; I actually liked going and being involved. I find a correlation there.
In Jr high and high school I stayed at the top of my class, including the top ten list at my high school. I then graduated Magna cum Laude from one of the Best National Universities, as listed by U.S. News and World Report, and went on with a 4.0 in all my grad classes. Forgive me, but all I can do is give my opinion on my own experiences, and of those I saw around me. I was surrounded by exceptional students who gave much of their time to their university by choice. So yes, I believe that an atmosphere of academic excellence does attribute to students wanting to excell.

And if posting a reply to you makes me obsessive, then you and Pittsmom fall right alongside in that OCD category, because if no one was writing back attacking me for my difference of opinion, then I'd have nothing to reply to now would I?

Copterguy,
All societies require a membership, and all of them give free cords. I obviously don't know how far back your day was, but all of the extra merchandise from other societies cost extra, medallions included, and have since I was in school.

And as your prepare for college apps, you may list it. Some people like to do that. That guy probably did get a scholarship. Maybe a Cleas Nobel for $5,000, pretty significant money. Who knows. I'm sure he's a real guy and he most likely said that. The society helped him, so they can put it in their letter.

This may come as a shock, but we received a letter for my daughter to join, and we didn't. Without any prodding from her parents, she has spent her extra time and taken extra classes to graduate before her senior year, and I don't think we'd use any of the benefits. If I thought that the only benefit of joining was to add it to the bottom of a college app, we'd have joined. But I agree, that's not what it's about.

EmberC - please re-read my posts. I never said NSHSS was a scam. You kept using that word. I simply questioned its math. I never made personal attacks against you. I simply pointed out that you are shill for NSHSS. The only one here attacking individuals is you.

But I want to stay on point. Just on the membership fees alone last year, this society earned over $4.8 million....and it only dished out $133,000 in scholarships.

EmberC, I understand that some people on this thread support this Society. Certainly any students who have received scholarships or gone to events and found them useful will think this is a worthwhile organization.

My point about cords is that when students receive a cord at graduation if it's from the school it's usually given to the student as a recognition of his or her accomplishments. It's been some years since I graduated from high school and got a medallion, but I do know that at some college commencements students who graduate cum laude still receive free cords. A lot of academic honors are bestowed without requesting a fee.

This particular group raises some questions for me. Pittsmom and MommaJ and others earlier on have made really good points, and that is why I find this thread informative.

Pittsmom,
I’d like to address those statements“I was respectful of your views” and “I never made personal attacks against you” So you “never attacked” me, and you and MommaJ have always been “respectful” of others’ opinions. If you don’t mind, I’ll recap.

I’ll point out that you started attacking my views when I originally posted to no one in particular, simply addressing the question on the forum. At that point, after you initiated the attacks, it's a fair game. A person guilty of the crime shouldn’t point fingers.

First, I’d like to agree with your statement that “when one doesn't like the facts that are presented, s/he resorts to personal attacks" Thank you for bringing that to light so that we can stop this bombardement from MommaJ on everyone who has a different opinion from hers. Some of her unwarranted personal attacks are illustrated below.

In my original post I addressed the question on the forum, "Is this society a scam?" Most people were throwing the word "scam" around, and that is what I was responding to. In my second post, I addressed no one person, again, but instead, addressed the issue of reduced membership fees. I never said Pittsmom claimed it was a scam personally. However, as soon as I gave my opinion, I was attacked by MommaJ, throwing false and unwarranted accusations, saying:
"Please don't rely on the posts of a new member....[she must be] an employee or principal..." because no one is allowed to have a difference of opinion on here apparently.
And again, resorted to the same tactic with John006a "If you are legit and not a NSHSS plant (riiigghht)...."
And again, “your claims that membership constitutes an "extracurricular activity" and equates to "being in an academic atmosphere [that] helps a student's drive to do well." Gimme a break.” About which I never claimed. I said that it offers activities in an academic environment. Again, read more closely before making attacks.
And again, trying to debunk my opinion in a very disrespectful manner, saying that hers is more valid “since my child took one of their summer trips to Europe. (Did yours?)” obviously saying that anyone who hasn’t been on a P2P trip can’t have an opinion as valid as hers. As it turns out, we have used the P2P program, so I guess her sarcasm there backfired.
And again, “if you aren't a principal, employee, or retained PR firm, you are one obsessed environmental biologist” simply for shielding off the attacks from someone who can’t debate without attacking.
And then again, “give my regards to John006a, …defending the fantabulousness of NSHSS” implying that we are a secret malicious group who meets to make knowingly false statements on this forum just to confuse people, rather than (“respectfully”) admitting the fact that there are people who don’t agree with the word “scam” in this situation.

So, MommaJ, Pittsmom and I want to respectfully ask you to stop resorting to unfounded accusations when you don’t have an educated argument to make. Thank you, Pittsmom, for bringing that to light.

Then you, Pittsmom, chimed in with the same attack tactic AFTER I said I had no affiliation, with "...perhaps [you are] a PR flack for NSHSS???" still trying to discredit my opinion just because I disagree with the word "scam," both of you completely ignoring my earlier statements of my non-affiliation.
And again, “Others on this board have also tolerated your ‘cheerleading’” trying to reduce my opinion to a mere brainless cheerleading act, rather than replying, as you say, “respectfully.”
And again, “ALWAYS be skeptical of those professing to have no affiliation with a group [when they support that group]” once again implying that I am affiliated because of my opinion after I said I wasn’t.
And again, “You will gain nothing by participating in this organization - other than a chance at a lottery ticket - or being insulted by "alumni" like EmberC.”
- First, there are a lot of members who participate in the offered activities and have won scholarships who would completely disagree with that statement. You cannot make an all-inclusive statement like that without sound facts.
- And secondly, once again, professing my affiliation, contrary to my repeated attempts to assure you that I have none, but that I simply don’t see a “scam” here.
And again, tried to debunk my opinion further with your sarcastic "WOW! You aren't in any way affiliated with NSHSS, yet you called the headquarters to ask if the recipients are real or made up? Hmmmmmmm......" which was a complete misreading on your part, but completely rude, again.
Then again, from MommaJ, who finds it "very amusing" that she *thinks* you told me off because she didn’t take the time to read the posts either, where it turns out that you just misread what I said (again, thanks for the respect you claim MommaJ extended) and says that because I am defending my opinion, it confirms that it's a waste of money, which is not a valid argument at all. Right here is another example of your statement that “when one doesn't like the facts that are presented, s/he resorts to personal attacks.”

If you have any doubts as to how this started, go back and read the thread.

And yeah, my decimal was off. I corrected that in my next post, thank you for pointing it out. I do mean that, I like to have my mistakes corrected. However, it doesn't discredit the points I made. And now that it is corrected, you’re doing it again, trying to discredit all of my valid points due to one typo, rather than continue on “respectfully” with the issue. Again, I see your statement right here at work, “when one doesn't like the facts that are presented, s/he resorts to personal attacks”

So no, it is 100% false that I am the only one attacking anyone on here. The only difference is that I am big enough to admit that when pushed, I pushed back harder. I’d have more respect for you if you’d own your own actions and not try to climb up on some high horse after those actions to appear angelic to the new readers.

If you want to address finances again, let’s do it:

Having statistics are good, but knowing how to interpret them is better. In order to find out if the financials for this society are in line with others, we have to look at other organizations of the same type. I chose Golden Key because it is the most highly respected world-wide.
What are some of the other expenses that such a business might incur? Let's explore:

REVENUE:
Membership dues........................................$ 5,659,120 65%
• Member services.........................................$ 944,649 11%
• Corporate sponsorships contributions,
and contributions in kind............................$ 262,736 4%
• Royalties......................................... ............$ 1,434,700 16%
• Investment gains and losses
and interest income, net.............................$ 377,708 4%
• Other............................................. ..............$ 28,823 0%
• Net assets released from restrictions..........$ 127,155
TOTAL SUPPORT AND REVENUES.....................$ 8,834,891

PROGRAM EXPENSES:
• Student recognition.....................................$ 2,896,303 34%
• University activities....................................$ 1,867,338 22%
• Member benefits.........................................$ 1,735,781 21%
• Leadership/volunteer training.....................$ 914,783 11%
TOTAL PROGRAM EXPENSES............................$ 7,414,205 88%

That leaves 12%, which is broken down further, leaving a rough 5% for scholarships. NSHSS gives out a rough 3%, which to me does not jump out and scream discrepancy, especially due to the fact that Golden is much more established. Non-profits have to pay for other things as well, and as we have figured out, scholarships are not the #1 objective of any honor society, but rather activities and benefits, so stop focusing solely on scholarships. Giving out all monies in scholarships is a completely false expectation that you have decided honor societies must be made to adhere to, which never has been the sole objective.

Copterguy,
Truly, I appreciate that you recognize what I am saying without throwing out accusations or attacking my opinion. I completely understand what you are saying. When a student does well in school, they receive "free" honor chords.

However, using your logic earlier that since the student must pay for the membership to join and use the benefits of the society, and thus get their free cords, effectively making them $60 cords, I'll argue that a student must pay thousands of dollars in tuition to the school in order to get the free cords for academic excellence. In essence, they are ridiculously expensive cords that schools give out for "free".

On the other hand, I myself could not have had much higher honors, and did receive all the free cords, but never any free medallions. My point was that this society offers the same, and therefore I don't see that as a discrepency either.

EmberC - you may characterize others posts any way you want. But no matter how you slice it or dice it the fact remains....
Just on the membership fees alone last year, this society earned over $4.8 million....and it only dished out $133,000 in scholarships.

And again, I'm not sure why you keep bringing up Golden Key, unless you want people to know that the founder of NSHSS was the former founder Golden Key and was ousted after a "scathing internal report accused him of sloppy accounting and inappropriate behavior with college co-eds."

EmberC - Let's clear up one small matter. Although you have interpreted my doubts of your true affiliation as being an attack (and I think anyone reading your defensive posts of NSHSS would come to the conclusion that you have some affilation with the group, despite your protests), I don't recall saying that your responses were "nonsensical," that you couldn't make an "educated response" or that you sounded "dumb." No, those were your words:

"Read ALL of the words before making nonsensical responses. If you can't make an educated response you just end up sounding dumb, which yes, MommaJ, I agree, is very amusing."

Although I was not fortunate to win an award in grade school for perfect attendance, I did manage to snag the top spot in the first grade spelling bee. I somehow graduated third in my high school class of over 200 students....and I too graduated magna cum laude with a 3.9 QPA in college. But all of that is meaningless with respect to this topic.

And all I'm saying is do some research and make a fair comparison. I did that. You didn't.

I didn't interpret anything. I spelled all of your and MommaJ's attack out directly in my last post. In contrast, you implied that I couldn't give an educated response with sarcastic responses such as the "WOW! You aren't in any way affiliated with NSHSS, yet you called the headquarters to ask if the recipients are real or made up? Hmmmmmmm......" and others like it (as illustrated above).

There are plenty of reputable organizations where someone has been reprimanded for unacceptable behavior. If no one was ever reprimanded and made to adhere to stricter policies, I'd hate to see how all of our organizations and agencies operate today.

If saying that someone did something one time that was brought to light, is an argument to say that the entire organization is criminal and should be brought down, then using your argument, it only goes to follow that you support the shutdown of the entire Catholic organization due to wrong-doers being ousted, as seen here in just a couple examples:
"Christopher, Pope or Antipope of Rome" St. Pachomius Library
"Ousted Pope brought back by the Fascists"
Ousted Pope brought back by the Fascists News that matters

Again, that's only using your own logic, Pittsmom, not mine.
I think it's a respectable organization, and I agree with the moral teaching they try to instill.

Contrary to your insinuation that the running of an organization should reflect solely in the actions of a single person (which was bought out and corrected) I think it's acceptable and expected to bring everything to light so we can make an informed decision about things. It still remains that Golden Key is the most highly respected honor society world-wide, and it, like others, is partnered with other respectable programs. To answer your question, that's why I bring it up.

Pittsmom,
There you go again, you just can't stop, can you? If you can't think of another reason that someone might think it's not a scam, then reread my posts, and think really hard about the points that I make.

And yes, those were my words, in response to your words, which all together, initiated attacks that you now deny. Just own up. I did.

And no,it's not meaningless. I was illustrating the actions as coupled with performance, along with others that I had around me who also excelled while giving extra time. It's a completely relevant illustration.
