Walt99 looks like he is trying to maximize merit money opportunities, and for that, one really does need to apply widely and well -- and it looks like he has done that, because that is a LOT of $$$$! Congrats!

My D applied to 15 schools. Every single one is somewhere she feels she could be happy and where I'd be proud to have her attend. She can get herself to where she wants to be in life from every single one of them. We visited all but 2 of the 15.

Her list is long because she has a strong enough resume that we both thought it was important she never have to say "could I have gotten in to X if I applied?" That said, we didn't count on her getting into any of the top top schools she's applying to and made sure she was applying to a good selection of fit schools and some safeties.

I would also like to say that my oldest applied to 8 schools, and after watching him get rejected from more than one school where he absolutely fit by stats, we were a bit more paranoid this go round.

Walt99,
How did you develop this strategy? Did you take a page from the Curmudgeon Playbook? Did your school support you in this endeavor?

If others turn down the Seton Hall full ride, do they give it to the alternates or is it forfeited?

Walt99,
CONGRATS!!!!!!! My daughter applied to 10 schools and so far she has been accepted to 4. No rejects yet, but it is definitly about strategy and money. A family friend is a "college admissions coach" and her suggestions are exactly as your plan of attack. We have worked very hard to accomplish a common goal and fortunately, some of us take "getting in" and "getting it paid for" very seriously.
My D was accepted to St Joseph's university (46K presidential scholarship, 16K United scholars award), Syracuse, and Pitt. Those we her "safety schools" but right now they are #1 based on the amount of aid they have offered.
"GOOD JOB AND GOOD LUCK" Your parents must be very very very proud!!!!!

Counting Down: That was EXACTLY what I was intending to do. I'm glad that it worked out, but in retrospect, I would definitely make some school changes.

2blue: Thank you, I really appreciate it. I feel as if I made the right choice.

BunsenBurner: I'm not denying that she is, at times, capable of giving good advice. But a quick search of her posts will show that many of them come with a judgmental, critical undertone that highlights her "superior" judgment. I only responded to her in this thread after she repeatedly questioned my motives in other threads. I love the fact that she tried to criticize so innocently... "are we missing something?" - right.. she was setting herself for the opportunity to b critical of others.

JustLookin and sunshine, thank you! I'm glad it worked out.

CountingDown: I really just took the time to thoroughly research a variety of schools using CC and various guidebooks. I would have to say, when I first started looking for schools, I never thought that I would eventually be able to name the locations and other information about such a vast number of schools. My friends look to me for college information. That's the funny part.
My counselor supported my rationale that prestige necessarily isn't indicative of education quality, but he wasn't very well-informed about the more obscure schools or colleges that students at my school hadn't applied to in the past. So I was on my own in that regard. He also initially wasn't supportive of the idea of applying to so many schools, because he had witnessed kids doing this with the more prestigious schools, hoping to gain admission to one. However, he did say that fishing for merit scholarships is one of the few reasons that he could support when someone is applying to a large number of schools.

If others turn down the full ride at Seton Hall, they go to their alternate list. As third alternate (13/10), I would need three students to turn down a full ride. In my opinion, they'd be crazy to do so. It was disappointing though, because I was reassured by the admissions office (The Chancellor made the decision), my counselors, and other students who had received the scholarship, that if I met the qualifications (which I did) I would be awarded the scholarship. I'm still optimistic and hoping for the best.

sassohiomom: Thank you and congratulations to your daughter! I have quite a few friends that applied to St. Joseph's University and look forward to attending next year. Unfortunately I didn't discover it until after the application deadline, or I would have switched it out with one of the colleges on my list.

jym626: I'm not quite sure yet, but currently Seattle University is near the top of the list. I love the Pacific Northwest and the benefits of a Jesuit education.

Congratulations! If you have any parent-type questions about Chicago, please feel free to PM me. I have a son who graduated last year and a daughter who is a first year.

Congratulations and a Reminder

MODERATOR'S NOTE:

Participants in this thread are reminded that the topic of this thread is congratulations about (college) class of 2012 offers of admission, and should stick to that topic in this thread, which will soon be quite lengthy.

Participants are also reminded that if someone is observed violating the College Confidential Terms of Service,

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/...q_new_faq_item

the credited response all the time and EVERY time is NOT to reply with a public post decrying the violation but to use the "report problem post" link that you will find on every post on CC. Do that each time and every time you see a post that is problematic, and let the moderation team jointly decide how to respond.

Congratulations to all the admittees, and best wishes to the applicants still awaiting news.

Daughter received $10,000 year merit scholarship at U Chicago - unexpected and very gratifying. Also, what a classy looking acceptance letter and folder - that elegant gray tone. They really have their own style don't they?

^ Thanks, ThatMom - just one of many here on CC who are doing pretty well in a historic difficult year for admissions. I think we all need to keep the demographics in mind when we look at our kids' results.
