| Congratulations to everyone and their kids on their admissions, scholarships, accomplishments and having the wisdom, courage and strength to move on after rejections/waitlists.
We were very blessed as my DD got accepted to all the schools she applied.
We also overestimated the amount of merit scholarships she would get. Here is what she has:
Duke, Emory: Admitted - with NO financial aid
Vanderbilt, WashU and Pomona: Admitted - with SOME merit $ (between 10-35% of total cost of attendance)
USC, BostonU, Tulane, Univ Richmond: Admitted- with SUBSTANTIAL merit $. (between 75%-100% total cots of attendance)
Her dream school is WashU (they are soooo good at wooing the kids!).... but she probably will not attend, as we would have to get huge loans to pay for it.
Tough decisions ahead and a very short month to visit schools and make final decisions.
Good luck to everyone!

| Similar decision matrix Our D is in at Emory with no aid; wait listed at Davidson
In at Fordham and Clemson with 20-50% merit aid
In at U of AL, Auburn, and U of K, all into their honors colleges, with full scholarship+
Money is an issue. It is hard to pass up the full ride, especially as part of a fellows program with great bennies.
Thanks for sharing |

| Hi everyone, this is my first time posting...I guess I have just been a "stalker" reading everyone's posts for the longest time. My D has accepted an offer and we have sent in a deposit to American University. She was given a Dean's Scholarship for $18000 a year plus some additional financial aid in the form of loans. We still have to come up with a substantial amount but are waiting on some promising outside scholarships. I am keeping my fingers crossed, while still planning for the fact that they may not come through.
I have a S in the local community college so this was my first foray into the Big world of colleges and universities. What a stressful time this has been...and an eye opener. My D is in the top 2% of her class with a 4.07 weighted/3.93 unweighted GPA, excellent EC's and reccomendations and huge amounts of volunteer/leadershipwork over the years, plus is an AmeriCorps member. So I believe that that combination got her into American with the scholarship since they are very much into community service.
She was also accepted to Brandeis, St. John's, Drexel and BU. However, the first three she applied to because the apps were free an she figured why not. She also applied to BC (waitlisted), Johns Hopkins (waitlisted), Villanova (waitlisted), Georgetown (denied), Vassar (denied), and William and Mary (denied). She was really disappointed about Vassar, and we kind of new Georgetown was a reach, but no hurt in trying.
She is really excited about American though because she has always dreamed of being in DC, so I am excited for her. She is a great kid, more than anyone could ask for in a child, and we are really, really close. So needless to say I am going to be going through some very rough times when she leaves. We live about 4.5 hours aways, so it isn't too far, but far enough. I am so happy for her though and I know that American and being in DC is going to open many doors for her and I know she will excel. The reality of the whole school search/wait/results was rough though because we had very high hopes with her stats and all, but everyone is saying how this year's graduating class has been the most competitive class in a long time, so I feel very fortunate for what she was offered. I believe that God has put her where He wants her and I cannot wait to see the person she becomes.
So congrats to all!!! |

| American is a GREAT school and DC does provide incredible opportunities. I know two students currently there and they are having really positive experiences. One interned with a US senator the summer after freshman year. Vassar is a great place too, but she wouldn't have gotten any money there. I think you are correct that your daughter has found the place she was meant to be. Welcome to your first post! |

| Soozie,
Congratulations to your D - I remember driving her to RISD in her sophomore year (after she graciously hosted my D's visit to Brown). She knew she had a project that would take most of the night. If she has questions about Cornell, I would be glad to try to help. |

| WJB,
From a very infrequent visitor (these days) and more infrequent poster, my congratulations.
I still remember your post about smaller school "culture" and fit. It had the most influence on me (and I think many others) I appreciated your input and help (and that of Soovievt, Garland, Sybbie, marite and others) - now 3 years ago - unbelievable). I hope your D has enjoyed Wash U and that your son enjoys his experience. |

| Aw, thanks very much, glfrdrdad, and nice to "see" you. I hope your D is enjoying Brown. After this year's round of college visits, I decided that Brown is where I would want to go if I could go back to college (not that I could get in!). |

| I would like to thank all the contributors to CC and especially all the wonderful parents who have generously shared their sons and daughters experiences.
D was extremely fortunate and accepted at the eight schools in which she applied (Yale, Duke, Northwestern – Medill, Syracuse – Newhouse, Mizzou – Journalism, U Miami, U Washington, and U Colorado). Although she didn’t apply for scholarships she was offered extremely generous ones from Mizzou, Syracuse, and Miami.
Many thanks again and I promise to hang around and help others. |

| xiaojie: Vassar is terrible for girls. They really do try and even their gender parity. And the admit rate was very low this year.
Congrats on American! Good friend has very happy D who attends.
By terrible with Vassar, I meant in admissions. I'm sure it is not terrible for the girls who attend. Just wanted to clarify. |

| mythmom-LOL-I read your first sentence "Vassar is terrible for girls," and thought...well, never mind what I thought. Vassar seems wonderful for girls who attend, my H is actually a graduate from the first group of men they brought into the college in the early '70's, and he has been very persuasive in "pushing" the daughters of two friends to apply and enroll. Both girls had great experiences. |

| Oh dear. Even with my clarification. I had to go back and amend after posting because I love Vassar.
I guess my view is colored by D's who is a proud Barnard student who feels Vassar is not living up to its Seven Sisters history.
That said, S was accepted and would have love to attend had dream school not accepted him.
Please all Vassar folk, forgive me for the bluntness and poor wording of my statement. Vassar seems close to paradise for all who attend. |

| oooh mythmom-- good thing I "know" you and will forgive you
Having been at VC during what they called the "cluster years" in the 70's when the classes were becoming coed, it was still 75% female then, but it was still fine for the women. Ironically, I had equally if not more male than female friends. Vassar was, and still is, a great school for both sexes. |
