Five students have set up tents on South Lawn, where they say they will remain, subsisting only on water, Gatorade, and tea, until Columbia responds to several demands.

Dennis Dalton, a 69-year-old Gandhian scholar and professor of political science at Barnard, has joined a group of Columbia students in their hunger strike, the professor said Saturday.

The announcement came one day after a second group of students voiced their intention to join the five already participating in the strike. The protesters' demands include reform of the Core Curriculum, revocation of Columbia's 197-C rezoning plan for Manhattanville, and greater resources for the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race.

Wow. It's been 6 days already. On Saturday one student was brought to the hospital and has been forced to stop striking (though the blog did not specify that she was brought to the ER due to not eating, it's a reasonable assumption).

I hope that the administrators respond thoroughly and thoughtfully to the students in a timely manner, and I also hope that the students will be satisfied with meaningful discussion, even if it does not result in all of the changes they envision.

I hope it works out for everyone...
