Colgate and Holy Cross while similar to Lafayette both enjoy better national reputations.

Do a search on this forum. There was a long thread about Lafayette within the last two weeks. S's advisor at his prep school is high on Lafayette. He thinks the academics are as stringent as Colgate even though L. doesn't enjoy quite as strong a reputation. Lafayette is not as strong in S's sport. Great campus in a not-so-great town. Advantage over Colgate is better access to NY and Phila.

The newly renovated library in the center of campus is a real show-stopper. Now the buildings on the rest of the campus can get some attention; many just need to be spruced up a bit. It's small-town, village green atmosphere is very appealing to many, but even with the easy availability to NY & Philly via the interstates, most students stay on campus for the weekends. Sports there are still popular although not as strenuous as other of their Patriot League schools, but definitely better than D-3 LACs to which Lafayette is often compared such as Trinity, Bates, Hamilton, Kenyon and Colby. It's Marquis Scholars program is among the best around. Lafayette is an excellent school with a lot of spirit and many dedicated alums.

the area is definitely a depressed one, and not the greatest as far as safety. but it is considered an excellent school in our area. (we have several excellent schools around here). I truly think you need to visit the area to appreciate it.

Daughter is a freshman in the Civil Engineering program at Lafayette. She loves her professors and the course material. Even though she is an athlete she has done well. The professors she has had contact with are very approachable and interested in the students. She complains about studying all the time but says she is no longer bored(like in HS). Most her time is spent on campus with an occasional trip off campus to eat or shop. The campus is very safe with no episodes that I am aware of this year. The school is very good with financial aid and their calculator was pretty accurate for her first year. She has friends in the Marquis Scholar program and has taken a trip to NY with them. For sports the Lehigh Football game seems to be the highpoint of the year. Lafayette is still on the small side and anyone considering it should desire that in a school. So far my wife and I have been very happy with the attention she has recieved in the Engineering program. She communicates with friends at large schools in VA(not UVA) and most of them are bored or unhappy with their public choices. None of them are engineering majors however.
