Any current Dickinson parents or brand new ED parents?

My D was just accepted ED to Dickinson; she is totally thrilled and so are DH and I. There's not much action on the Dickinson board, so I thought I would try the ole' reliable Parents Forum.

I would love to hear others' experiences--hopefully mostly positive (!) and begin a network of knowledgeable parents to ask my obsessively detailed questions to as the months go on.

Aw, congrats to your D! My daughter is finishing her first semester this week. Dickinson was her first choice for most of the search process but she did not apply ED for various reasons. When it came down to decision time she really had a hard time choosing, with Conn College and Brandeis as the other options, but she picked Dickinson and has no regrets.

I can't say I'm a knowledgeable parent--we live in Germany, and I wouldn't say D is the kind to share lots of details about her day-to-day experience, but she is very happy.

Does your D have a major in mind?

My D was also interested in Conn College and Skidmore as well, but Dickinson gradually became her clear first choice. She visited twice and the second time sealed the deal. She is currently thinking about double majoring in art and in either environmental science/biology/botany. Right now, we're just thrilled she's going to college!

My junior son is very interested in Dickinson and we will be visiting over his break in March. Can you fill me in on whatever you and your kids found good/bad/attractive/unattractive about the campus, students and programs? Our impressions that it might be a good place for him are based only on the guidebookds and the website.

Congrats to your daughter! My oldest son (out of college now) applied ED and it can be a wonderful thing.

I grew up in Northern VA and my parents were from PA, so several times each year we drove through Carlisle on the way to see my grandparents. I always liked Carlisle and thought that Dickinson was the ideal small college. I'd have loved for my girls to be interested in it, but they've been raised in a small southern town and were yearning for bigger cities. I have no doubt that your daughter will love it - it's a wonderful college and community.

My cousin's D is a junior at Dickinson & LOVES it!! She is from Pittsburgh. She is studying bio/environmental & has gone on some really great practical experiences. She was a topnotch high school student & had her pick of schools. She is very happy that she chose Dickinson.

Bumping this thread up--RD decisions should be out momentarily, and I would love to hear from any future Red Devil kids/parents.

We're visiting Dickinson this coming Wednesday.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what we should so/see/go or eat? We are doing the info session and tour, my son also has an interview set up with admissions and a coach. We also plan to check out the Hillel. He did not want to make an appointment there because he wants to see it "as is."

Any ideas?

boysX3, you should check out the Quarry, the oncampus coffee shop; DH and I hung out there and eavesdropped while our DD met with a nice Jewish girl whose name had been provided to us by the Hillel director. We did not eat anywhere in town because we have family in Harrisburg, but there are some cute downtown restaurants in Carlisle. DD was accepted ED I and is raring to go! There is a facebook group of kids headed for Dickinson (tell your son to search "Dickinson 2012" groups and he should find it)--those kids have been chatting up a storm.

Peabodie, I know your D is headed to Dickinson--any other parents (or kids) out there? A CC meet up at orientation would be a hoot.

We visited Dickinson over spring break and my son loved it! He loved the look and feel of the campus, and enjoyed the people he met. At lunch time, he just went up to a random table of students and asked if he could sit with them--they were really nice and friendly and very full of information and anecdotes.

While there he also met with the soccer coach and will be attending the soccer camp this summer. It will give him a good idea about whether he wants to play soccer at this level or not, and whether he would be a good fit with the coach and team. The coach will give him an evaluation at the end of the camp I suppose.

My S said he would be happy at Dickinson with or without the soccer, so all is good! He'll definitely be applying this fall. If he ends up being a recruit, he will go up to watch the team and I hope he will also meet some of the people on CC!

Ok--we are now T minus ONE MONTH for our Dickinson freshmen moving in. Since D was the creator of the Dickinson 2012 facebook group (now approaching 500 members) I thought I would follow her lead and see if I could round up other similarly situated CC parents. Peabodie, I know you're out there--and I know there are a few others as well. We will be arriving in Carlisle early on the 20th. It might be fun to set a time to meet up for a chat accompanied by whatever sort of libation seems appropriate at the time. Feel free to PM me if you would prefer.
