Spring 2008 Parent Opportunities to Meet Admission Officers

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has posted its spring 2008 schedule of National College Fair events.

NACAC Spring National College Fairs Schedule and Information

College fairs offer students and parents a chance to meet a lot of admission officers from a lot of different colleges. They usually include specialized workshops on such topics as financial aid and selective college admission.

I'll try to post to this thread, as the information comes in, links to college schedules of regional information sessions or high school visits conducted individually or jointly by colleges. If you hear of any such meetings, please post the news here, and after we attend various meetings, it would be much appreciated to post visit reports to this thread.

Best wishes for finding a good college for your children who are juniors, sophomores, or younger.

Are these events worthwhile if the student already has a list of schools and is planning to attend an info session at each school already?

And more importantly, do the schools give out free keychains or T-shirts or pens?

Remember to get there early before all the free tuition coupons are given out by the Ivy League schools.

And yes. They can be worthwhile. Any list you have now will most certainly change before app time. Some change more than others.

We went to one of these and then a couple of much smaller events. Don't expect a lot but keep your eyes and ears open for new opportunities.

Have your child take preprinted labels with their name, address, and the email address they will be using for colleges (firstnamelastname@sitename.com) on it. Saves a ton of time.

We went to one in the fall, and I'd say it was hit and miss. Some of the colleges send alums to these things, and they may not be knowledgeable about the program in which your child is interested.

On the upside, we met a fabulous person from a school we wouldn't have normally considered. He made such an impression on us that we'll always look favorably on that college, and I've even called him since to ask generic questions about the process. He was helpful then, too.

Token - when, in your opinion, should kids start attending info sessions for colleges? I remember from your other posts that your son started quite young.

Yes, my son started quite young in attending regional college information sessions, and we did that because I was not too aware of colleges of the kind he might be interested in. (I had earlier attended general college fairs on my own to research the issue of college admission for homeschooled students.) I have found the regional meetings useful for keeping my son's application list broader--he truly doesn't have a single "dream" college, but is open to applying widely and seeing what happens.

But what age /grade seems to be "not too early" in your view? PM me if you prefer.

BTW, here is Denver College Fair

Thanks for the links about the other college fairs.

I would take a child to college fairs (or regional information sessions) if you haven't already got a lot of clarity about which colleges to aim at. I'd start at about the age when the child is beginning to do "senior high level" class work, which of course varies from child to child, because one issue for a parent with an advanced learner is deciding the issue of some college at an early age versus a more selective college at a more nearly "normal" age.
