How *not* to get more financial aid...

One of my kids shared this true story with me.

It seems that the mother of an acquaintance was concerned that the family would not qualify for enough financial aid. So, sometime near the end of junior year, she made her son move in with a relative-- presumably so they could lie and say son was independent (or at least that she wasn't in the picture). No longer under the watchful eye of his mother, son used his new-found freedom to get his girlfriend pregnant. Ironically, he can now legitimately claim to be independent because he is a father-- but that's hardly what mom had in mind.

Don't try this one at home folks!

That was stupid of her. The son living with a relative made no difference at all - he would not have been declared independent.

Amazing, but hard to feel sorry for the mom who tried to cheat. I feel for the unborn kid.

He's not going to be independent for quite a while, if the young woman involved pursues child support from him...

Don't practice financial aid without good protection.

Silly mom, tricks are for kids!
