The Smith commencement speaker Margaret Edson was wonderful! She won the Pulitzer Prize (for "Wit") and then promptly went back to being a kindergarten teacher:

Not a commencement speaker, but Paul McCartney received an honorary degree at Yale this weekend. I'm sure the crowd flipped out.

James Carville and Mary Matalin were the commencement speakers at Tulane University. They recently moved to New Orleans.

Chris Matthews spoke at the WUSTL commencement yesterday.
He also spoke at Montgomery Community College in PA. I was at a hockey tournament with my 10 year old son and saw it in the local paper.

Wonder if it was the same speech.

Just read over on the Northwestern thread that their speaker will be Mayor Richard Daly. It has been very hush, hush regarding who is was going to be. My sister (whose son is there) and I were hoping for Bono!!

*is jealous of Harvard and JH* It would make my life if I had Rowling as my commencement speaker, and Bill Nye wouldn't be bad either!

Opera star Jessye Norman was the commencement speaker at UNC-Chapel Hill. The ceremony got rained out, so she gave her speech to just the graduating music majors and their families at the indoor departmental ceremony. Lots of people were really disappointed of course, but for the music folks it was wonderful.

momof chris

Given Caltech's location, I would have been more excited if they had a scifi writer/director. I never heard of Krulwick. I wonder what other choices there were. Still, looking forward to the commencement.
