Not an abbreviation, but here's a term you'll see on the boards: troll
This is someone who intentionally posts inaccurate and inflammatory info in order to get a rise out of people.
After being on the boards for a while they're usually pretty obvious and easy to spot -- but everyone ends up falling for it at one time or another. IMO the best thing to do is call their bluff, stop posting on the thread, and if they are really out of hand -- report them!

Am I correct in assuming that merit scholarships are based on the student’s stats but financial aid is based on need?

^ yes -- merit is for academic achievement, financial aid is based on formulas that determine financial need.

aah, tututaxi, generally correct but there are several admitted instances of "merit within need", and preferential packaging for meritorious candidates (more free money ,less self-help) and countless situations that although not recognized as such must have been the case.

According to our own College Confidential...
Ivy League colleges use a tool called the Academic Index to summarize the academic performance of applicants. Originally developed as a means of establishing common standards for student-athlete applicants, the Academic Index (AI) has become a sort of shorthand for ranking students. Other colleges, elite and otherwise, may also use variants of the Academic in their admission process.
