Lunitari: Yo triumphe!! (opening line of an Oxy Tiger cheer...). I had a great education at Oxy myself (decades ago of course). Couldn't get my kids to look at it but was relieved to find a similar spirit (tho radically different locale) in Walla Walla and mine will be Whitties not Oxyites. Congratulations on having a final decision.

Thanks, mmaah! And congrats to your Whitties! Whitman was one of my D's top contenders also.

My stepS went to Oxy and loved CA so much he returned after earning his MBA. That's always a possibility when the kids go so far away to school.

That's OK...it means that if I want to move closer to them when I retire, it'll be someplace warm where I never have to shovel snow!

oldfort, thanks, that is a very funny idea. He did end up chosing Cornell, by the way. I'm really looking forward to visiting, especially in the Fall.

Thanks, achat. The masters of architecture is a long 3.5 years. My son is getting really excited about Cornell, though, and the prospect of being a student again.
How about yours? Still enjoying the real world or getting ready to decamp back to academe? |

Hi Momrath,
My son is getting ready to decamp to academe, but in 2010, not this Fall. Going for a liberal arts degree again - an MA (or two) and possibly a PhD in Film and Media Studies. He did not enjoy the real-world that much. He has a job that he does not like (and does not pay as much). Not sure if his liberal arts degree will get him a more lucrative position but it will keep him happy for a while.. Thanks for asking. He is looking into NYU/Columbia and programs in California.

D decided, awhile ago actually, on American. The merit aid was far more generous than we initially realized and because the acceptance came earlier than some it got shuffled to the bottom of the pile. When we looked at everything again, it looked great! She is excited to be heading out of rural New England to DC. Fortunately she is experienced in some city life as we go to Boston often and she has traveled quite a bit. Otherwise it would surely be the country bumpkin goes to the big city. Our town is tiny.

Our D applied to 22 colleges. Unfortunately, this ridiculous number was her parents' fault. Her choice, however, is entirely her own and one that is amazing to us all. On March 31, her top choices were Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon. That changed on April 1 when Stanford accepted her. Poor Berkeley and CMU. She was offered a financial package that covers about 90% of all costs. Even now, with just two months to go, she still is in shock.

I wish I had read this sight earlier..... My son finally got into his 1st choice, as you can tell UPENN but what a ride through trial and error, He applied to 8 schools and got accepted to all. Most had good merit offers,25k Tulane, Full tuition and 1/2 RB from St.Johns, Tuition Juniata, Penn's letter came last and with 30K it may not be what the other offers were but he's wanted to go to Wharton for 5 years and all his work paid off.
