I hear from my son when he's bored walking back from class. I can usually count on a call a day. Only deviation is when he's dating somebody, then I don't hear from him at all.
He must save his "I'm bored" calls for the most important woman in his life at the time. |

POIH - Guess you didn't move to East coast. Sounds like a happy arrangement for all of you.
I have been taking both kids to Springsteen since they were old enough to walk. D2 just told me she wanted to go to see Taylor Swift. I now have 7 tickets in the lower section of Prudential. I have become a very popular mom among D2's friends. They all want a ticket. I told them that I could sell them at over $450/ticket now.

My musical tastes have gravitated more towards D's. I really like a lot of the new alt/Indie bands better than the old standbys but I may be abnormal in not being a big Springsteen or U2 fan and never liked Billy Joel or Elton John. I listen to the local college station and as hard as I try to come up with a band that she hasn't heard of, I rarely do. I'm finding I like Swedish rock bands.
I have never heard of Girlyman. Since D's best friend falls into the exact demographic described by TheDad, I'll bet D knows them.

It varies with my son. When he was in Chicago this summer, he called me just about every day, sometimes more than once. I think the fact that he was still very concerned about my health had a lot to do with that. Now that school's started again, and he's much busier, I hear from him a little less, maybe 4 or 5 times a week. Almost always when he's on his way from one place to another. (I'm constantly reminding him to talk directly into the phone, so the sound from the wind doesn't drown out his voice.) There are times when we talk for five minutes, and other times for an hour -- I always let him take the lead. And I love hearing from him and talking to him no matter how long the conversation may be. But we've always been close, and we've always spent a great deal of time talking to each other. I don't know if other people's kids in college do this, but ever since he was quite young, he seems to have very much enjoyed talking to me about what he's reading or learning in classes that he likes, in addition to talking about the rest of his life. I thought that might change when he went to college, but it hasn't.

And while I really miss talking to my son as often as I could when he was home AND I wish I heard from him more... I transferred this to thinking about how often I want my H talking to HIS mother or how I'd view it as a girl at college if a boy I liked was calling and or talking to his Mom a couple of times a day. Seriously, I'd wonder about the apron strings.

| Amen.
I'm so glad my DS calls me as often as he does because I know as soon as he finds a girlfriend, I'm toast. In HS, DS had a reputation for not talking much, but at home he was a magpie. He probably doesn't talk much at college so he calls me to get it all off his chest. The football calls will probably (hopefully) never end because no one at his school is interested in his hometown team. That thought makes me feel better about the day when I'm no longer his go-to friend.

| Our sons must be kindred spirits because my son calls to check up on our hometown team too. He also texts during his (UT's) football games too because nobody in his seating section knows as much about football as I, or my husband, do, and he just has to compare notes during the game.
He needs to find a girlfriend who knows alot about football, or it will never last! He grew up with a mom who can tell when a guard is pulling and if he made his block |

ag54 - My DS, too, needs a girl who can talk football. If she can't talk football, well . . .
I don't have near the skill you do in seeing what's going on down there on the field. My DD sounds like you - she can see holding or a missed block from a mile away. I'm too busy looking at the QB, running backs, or receivers. But, I know a bad play call when I see one! Our sons may be cheering for opposite teams in the National Championship.
Have you guys seen the Texas A&M fight song parody on Youtube? Absolutely hilarious.

| Happy Parents- being in touch with parents
My son is a freshman at UC Davis and he moved out this fall. We usually keep in touch with him through out the day- checking in - what were are doing! and we try to talk at nights (when possible) and keep the communication going. (how things going, how is he feeling, what is happening around, how is handling it etct).
Also, may be that he is our only son and we are used to have a stronger bond. We always text him before going to bed with a good morning or good night and he does the same. We are a very proud parents and we hope that he keeps if not the same, less but always in touch.

| I had no choice, I married a college football player, who ended up coaching highschool football for years, then I raised 3 football playing sons. It was - learn the game, or have nothing to talk about!
Is your son a Gator? My oldest just graduated from UF in May, my 2nd is a junior at UT, so I'm a Gatorhorn! I'll have to wear varying shades of orange with a splash of blue and white! Last year, we were going to shell out the $$$ if they met in the championship, but it didn't come to pass. (but I did get a cool picture of my son shaking hands with Tebow at the end of the game, he had front row seats behind the endzone where all the action took place, and we could watch him on tv the entire game, which was cool).
Go Gators, Go Longhorns!! (truly a house divided )
Where can I find the a&m parody?

DS grew up in The Swamp. He goes to a Big 10 school now. His college team just isn't as exciting to watch as the Gators. That may change over the next few years, though.
Go to Youtube and type in "Texas A&M Fight Song (Parody)". It's a keeper. |

This D has more similar music tastes to me than other D.
For graduation her class marched into the auditorium to a song I recommended by the Talking Heads. ( she loves Talking Heads, although the song she performed at commencement was by Carole King)
The band I had recommended was a band that is from her area ( Portland) and since many people she knows are bike riders and don't even own cars, I was surprised that she hadn't heard of Blind Pilot because they did a tour from Bellingham Wa, to San Diego,Ca last year, just using their bicycles and special trailers they designed themselves.
Can't get much more indie than that. |

P.S. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Aggies fight song - make sure to listen to the Aggies fight song with the lyrics before you listen to the parody. It will be a whole lot funnier!

| Yes, we didn't. DW got hooked to Facebook and now spend most of her time gtalk-ing or FBChat-ing. So DD is off the hook. It is working out very well for me as I've all the time in this world.
