Portland State person on Little People last night

On last night's "Little People Big World" the boys went on a visit to PSU in Portland. The rep from the school said they "like to see" an SAT of over 1250 and over a 3.5 GPA. What a joke. They were doing more than just doing a little puffery. According to their 2008 CDS the top 25% of freshmen had an SAT of 1160 and only 33% had a 3.5 or better with many under 3.0.

Maybe that's what they would like to see in their dreams.

Common Data Elements:

And Zach, get it together. You are looking like an idiot on national TV.

Okay, PSU is not the most selective school in the country. But it serves its purpose. They are stating on national TV that they would "like to see" higher stats in order to hopefully attract higher caliber applicants. What's wrong with that?

barrons most likely there are a lot of peer schools to PSU who would "like to see" stats in that range. Yeah, maybe they were being intentionally misleading but maybe not. I think the probably were just trying to put their best foot forward and I am sure overstating a bit for the cameras but the astute listener knows the difference between what they would like to have and what they actually get.

Not at the undegraduate level, but...

I work with some absolutely PHENOMENAL researchers at PSU. You don't have to be in hallowed halls of ivy to find amazing faculty/staff.

Agree with the Zach comment. Quite frankly, I think it's the parents that are pushing the boys into college based on their attitudes. Zach, in particular, doesn't seem to want to go and work. Perhaps he needs a gap year to mature a little bit.

I think when you are allegedly telling some prospects what your requirements are is not the time to attempt to mislead people into thinking you are something you are not. Obviously kids like those two--and even their parents would take that as gospel. I have nothing against PSU except if they try to misrepresent who they are which is an urban public school for the masses.
And Matt--don't waste the carbon to go see UCLA. I like Jeremy but my dog has as much chance as he does of getting into UCLA. Maybe a show with a real college counselor advising them would help get them into reality. It is a reality show.

Maybe being on a popular reality show will give them the "hook" they need to get into UCLA, or any other school for that matter.....

I saw that episode last night, and I was flabbergasted by not only the stats quoted by the admissions rep, but also the lack of rigor shown by the boys (particularly Zach). So, after the show I did some googling and found that the boys are in fact going to community college about 10 miles from home. I think that was a wise decision for both, especially Zach. I think Zach's body language said alot about whether he was ready to take on a traditional college experience.

I also saw the show and was inspired by the stated stats to look at Portland State's web site. It turns out that those are the stats required by the honors program. Because if anyone is honors material, it's Zach and Jeremy. (heavy sarcasm)

OK, perhaps I missed that they were interested in the honors program. Now Molly, she has the potential to make something of college. Going to CC is a good thing for the boys.

What? You mean a "Reality Shows" do not depict reality? What a shocker.

barrons: They never stated that they were interested in the honor's program. I was just struck, as were you, by the stats the admissions woman was stating. They seemed high for the school so I did a little checking.

Considering the blinders with which Matt and Amy view their children, it would not surprise me if Amy had asked about the honor's program. If you are a regular viewer you will remember that Matt at one point suggested Wharton to Jeremy. Actually, they had a little clip of that in this episode.

I guess it has been a long time since I have watched television, I had no idea that there was a show for Fisher-Price toys.

I was fascinated by this thread but unfortunately missed the show, so I found it on Youtube. I am wondering how much of the twins' apparent lack of readiness for college is because, well, they are boys. I've talked with pediatricians, guidance counselors, and therapists who all agree that the academic light bulb comes on later for boys.

I hope the show continues through the twins' post HS careers so we can see where they land and how well they do.

Side note: I've watched the show many times and find the fact that they are little people irrelevant. They are basically like any other family with teens!
