My D accidently left off College Prep Elective on Cal Poly application

My daughter just submitted her application to Cal Poly SLO this afternoon. I'm looking over the printed copy now and I noticed she left one of the A-G requirements out! She didn't list her college prep elective. She completed it as a junior at the local community college because she couldn't fit it into her h.s. schedule. It's an Applied Art.

What should she do? I realize they'll eventually see the transcript and see that she satisfies the requirement. But, will they automatically reject her because it's not listed on her application?? This is one of the schools that we really hope she gets accepted to, not only because it has her major, but it's also more affordable for us. I sure hope she didn't blow her chances!

Any thoughts? Someone please assure me that it will be okay. I still need to tell her when she comes home from the movie.

You need to talk to the SLO people about what to do. Leaving off a requirement, even the performing and performing arts requirement, could lead to problems. Who is to say that someone will catch the mistake by comparing transcripts to the application? I wouldn't count on it.

I'm sure that the answer will be as simple as notifying each CSU you applied to by email of the mistake. But I would definitely have your D check it out. It may require staying on hold for a while, but will give her peace of mind.

Have your D notify Cal Poly admissions by email immediately so that the error can be corrected.

Thank you for your quick replies. In the meantime, I had gone to Cal Poly's website and found the link about correcting the application. I see that "a mom" posted it here. As soon as D comes home, I'll have her get right on it. Hopefully, this will be a lesson learned that she needs to pay closer attention to everything on the apps. before hitting that submit button.

Now this is assuming I'm right about all of this! If not...well, then I worried for nothing. I've been known to do that from time to time.

I know Cal Poly absolutely refuses to allow a change of major once it's been submitted. A neighbor girl had put down Business and realized later it was impacted and wanted to change it. Too late. She called the Admissions office and they wouldn't budge. Thankfully, that isn't my D's issue. I would hope that just wanting to ADD a missed course will be okay.

Thanks once again!

It looks like she'll be alright, after all.

Okay, I think my D will be fine. I read a little further about the "a-g" requirements. Looks like I worried for nothing. Heck, this is all so new. After a few more apps. go out, I'm sure we'll ALL be experts in our household.

I was ASSUMING the Intro.to Computers would be her required College Prep elective. I just remembered that this is an Applied Art required for HIGH SCHOOL graduation. It isn't even on the "a-g" college prep list. Sheesh.

When I read the "g" requirement , it says the elective can be from any of the "a-f" courses listed. In that case, it looks like she'll be okay. She has 12 semesters of music. They can use a year of that as an elective.

I know that Cal Poly actually prefers MORE semesters of some of the "a-gs", though.

Thanks for your helpful replies!

Applying for college has become a science now!

Both DD and I thought only courses taken during high school should be listed in prep section. After she submit, I was told by another parent Algebra1 taken in middle school should also be listed. So I called and was advised DD should send a change to add Algebra1 so she would be given a credit. So she did.

But another campus doesn't care, they only use it if a student couldn't meet the min. math requirement. It seems each campus use the application in different ways.

Good luck to your daughter and mine

I'm glad you mentioned this, a_mom! I thought I had heard something at the Admissions Info. Session about middle school math. My daughter also had Algebra1 in middle school. Acclerated Algebra1 to be exact. I'll mention this to my D and have her contact them.

Thanks for the heads-up! Every little bit counts!
