Read this and thought I would post it here -- http://www.thejewishweek.com/news/ne...ndar_draws_ire
SUNY-Stonybrook will be open on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur next year, unlike what has been the case in the past. I was very surprised to read this.

lisztserve: Congrats on Case. This is one of my D's reaches. What are your thoughts? How does Case's Jewish vibe compare to Rochester/CMU/Wash U? Did you find the campus nerdy? (not that there is anything wrong with that). What does your S think?

Interesting article on Stony Brook - here is an excerpt: Quote: |
To ensure that some religions are not given preferential treatment, he said, the university is discarding the previously prepared calendar for next year and replacing it with one that keeps school open on Rosh HaShanah, Yom Kippur, Passover and Holy Week. The discarded calendar had the spring vacation coincide with Passover and Holy Week, wherever possible; the new calendar is crafted to have the spring break divide the second semester in half, no matter when Passover and Holy Week occur. As a result, the break next year occurs one week before the holidays.
| Most colleges are open on Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. As long as students are not penalized for missing classes - and it is not an exam day - not sure I am too troubled by this. Although - if they were previously closed on these holidays - it is a jarring change.
Apparently the other SUNYs are closed for these holidays.
What's the reaction in NY?

what is so troubling (in my mind) about what Stonybrook is doing is that it is a reversal of what has been the case in the past -- and it may well have been a facet of Jewish life there that influenced the decision of students currently there.
and since it is a change from prior practice, I wouldn't be surprised if there are "growing pains" as faculty and students have to deal with it.

It's exciting to hear all the good news. Congrats to all!!
My niece was accepted to Sonoma State University for pre-nursing. My SIL cried when she heard the news. Sonoma is about 7 hours away from us. She envies the extra few years I have with my D and the multiple years to come that I still have with my 10 year old S.
liszt - I do think Sarah Lawrence might appeal to my D. We will take more trips back east in the future and I'm sure she will want to see it.
I couldn't understand why my 10 year old kept saying he wanted to visit Drexel (or any college for that matter). Then my daughter jumped into the conversation and said "No (brother's name)! Drexel's not the school with the video gaming major." My son was thinking we would visit Champlain in Vermont. Now that line of thinking makes more sense to me when I think about my little guy and college!

I was surprised to find out that NYU was not closed for the Jewish holidays given its location and high percentage of Jewish students and faculty.
But with a very high international population and diverse ethnicities, they cannot close for relligious holidays that others might find significant or not.
D has taken days off and it has never been an issue. She just gives her professor a heads up beforehand.

I live in Stony Brook and frankly, I don't know many Jewish students who go to SUNY Stony Brook. Lots of Jewish faculty, though, and they probably aren't pleased.

I'm checking in to say CONGRATULATIONS to all of you who've received acceptances from schools that have been the long-time favorite.
Happy, happy for you and your kids.

Hi all,
I haven't posted for a long while, but I am SO happy to learn of the acceptances, especially to my alma mater, UDel!
I can hardly wait to see an updated list of all the acceptances. Good luck to everyone in the waiting mode!

Great news! S accepted to Elon today! I'm thrilled. S is excited, but confused. The schools on his list are so different and he likes certain things about each of them. A good problem to have I guess! Looks like we'll be making another visit to North Carolina...
