| My D auditioned at NY Unifieds and received a deferral also. They had auditions last weekend and will have them this coming weekend and will decide definitively by mid-March. Just like everyone else! Congrats on your acceptance and we are happy right now with at least a deferral vs. a no. |

| My D received a deferral today, so she'll have another long wait to add to her list. She's hanging in there. |

| My D also received the deferral letter today, so the waiting continues.

| Can someone tell me what deferrals mean? (Sorry, I'm new to all of this.) It looks like if you're deferred, the schools take another look after the audition rounds are over? Does one stand a decent chance of getting in if one is deferred? Thanks very much. |

| Generally speaking, a deferral can occur during the Early Decision or Early Action rounds of college admissions when a student is not denied, but is also not accepted. Their application goes on a deferral pile to be considered with the Regular Decision applicants and indeed some (not all) deferred students are then accepted when considered with the greater applicant pool.
In the case of a school such as Penn State which is a rolling admissions process with auditions, meaning they accept some students after each audition date and reject students as they go along, they also can send out deferral letters, meaning they will wait until they see all the remaining applicants audition before making their final decision on your acceptance. Some BFA schools do not send any rejections or acceptances during the audition season and wait until they see all applicants to make their final decisions on the acceptances. For example, that is the case with NYU, Syracuse, BOCO, and Carnegie Mellon (I will qualify that and mention that NYU and Syracuse have an Early Decision round in the fall). However, some schools such as PSU accept and deny students as they go along, but defer some until they have seen all applicants as they don't want to fill their class up yet. I haven't seen PSU defer many in the past but apparently they are this year which makes sense since they can have strong contenders and limited spots, but can't fill them all too early as there are still more auditions to go. Being deferred is a good thing as it means you are still in the running. Some deferred people can and will get in and some not, as there are more deferred applicants than slots available. Remember, some students who are admitted audition on the last possible audition day. For instance, two years ago, my daughter got into PSU and BOCO having auditioned on their last available audition day. Had all the slots been filled in the class, those audition dates would have been for naught. Hope that helps. You can think of a deferral a little like a callback or like a pile of applications dwindling down and you are still in the pack until it's over.
Susan
PS....welcome NewbieMTMom. At some point...you are gonna have to change your name, LOL...because I can assure you, you will become well versed in this process if you hang around here long enough. |

| I looked online today at PSU and it said da decision had been made and I will be notified by mail within the next two weeks. I'm guessing that I've gotten another rejection. |

| My daughter was accepted after the January 20th audition, received her acceptance letter in the mail 6 days after the audition, and her online site STILL says "a decision has been made and you will receive a letter in the mail within two weeks". So don't assume that you will receive a rejection. Keep the faith! We're all rooting for you! |

| We saw that letter as well. I just got off the phone with Paula, Cary's administrative assistant at PSU. She told me that PSU does things differently than other schools. Yes, all the decisions have been made. EVERYONE (accepted, wait-listed, rejected) gets the same online generic notification. That wording means nothing. Letters will be arriving this week and next with the decision. HOPe this helps. Relax and wait for snail mail. |
