Waitlisted...

I want to know! I know everything about the waitlist process, but I don't want to have to wait until after May 1st to hear and be locked into that school

Ugh. Anyone else in the same boat?

You will not be LOCKED INTO whichever school you put a deposit down with by May 1. If you get off a college's wait list, you may take the wait list offer and then back out of your original school (but lose the deposit). This is how it works. This is the NORMAL process. Everyone on a wait list who gets off it has to then withdraw from the school where they put a deposit down if they prefer the wait list school. You are NOT locked into it. You may withdraw from the original college if you are accepted from a wait list after May 1 (which is when wait list action picks up). When you withdraw, you then open a spot at THAT school for someone to get off THAT wait list. It has a domino effect.

Wow. YOU come off as quite rude AND know-it-all.

And yes, I am aware of said "domino effect" as I am waiting for the Penn State slot to open up. I have a housing deposit for the school that I happen to LOVE and am just waiting for the Penn State slot to open up just for laughs.

So, you're saying a commitment on a document that says "Yes, I will be joining the ____ 2014 MT class in the fall can be backed out of? That doesn't sound correct.

Schools expect that they will loose some students each year who have put down deposits to attend, accepted the offer to join the XXXXXXXX class of 2014, and then get in off the wait list at other schools after May 1st.

As Soozie said, you will loose your deposit at the first school, but it is expected by the schools that this will sometimes happen.

If you go to page 2 of the above document and look at the second bullet under "After you receive your admissions decision," the process is discussed in brief.

Dear, I was trying to HELP you. But after that, not sure why I am bothering to answer your question but I'll let it go.

YOU MUST commit to one school to ENROLL (not just housing deposit) by May 1. It is unlikely you will hear if you get off a wait list until AFTER May 1 when colleges get their commitments in from accepted students. So, since colleges KNOW that you will not be able to get off a wait list until AFTER May 1, they EXPECT that some students WILL get off a wait list at another college and thus WITHDRAW from the college where they put down the deposit (not the housing one) and where they committed to enroll. The only thing you lose is your deposit.

I know you say that what I say doesn't sound correct and you don't have to believe me since I am a "know it all". However, my profession is a college counselor and so I do know how this works. You can choose to ignore my friendly advice that I offered to help you out. You appeared confused that you would be "locked in" where you enroll before May 1 but that is not true if you get off a wait list and that usually happens AFTER May 1. That's how it works. Believe it or not if you wish. And....you're welcome.

singingactress- if you are just waiting for the Penn State waitlist spot to open up just for laughs...then why don't you turn it down so you don't waste their time as well as make the person who may be in line behind you wait even longer when they may not "already have a deposit down at a school that they LOVE." There are some students on here that hope for a miracle after all acceptances go out and find out they are only waitlisted, so if you aren't planning on attending then give someone else the chance. Also, there is no need to be rude to a member that is taking time out of their day to help you attain valuable information, you are going to college in the fall...time to grow up.

singing actress- I don't think you will find anyone more knowledgable on this site than soozievt. She devotes HOURS and HOURS to providing info here to those of us who don't know what we are doing. It is like you are getting a private college counselor for free! I would take advantage of getting her advice if I were you. And- the MT world is a small one and you never know who you may run into one day..........

singingactress, I am saddened by your post that you are waiting for a spot to open up for laughs. For some of us or our children the waitlist is a small ray of hope that they can still study something they love at a school they are excited about. Is there some reason that you have not shared where you have been accepted? I wish you could understand how it feels not to have been accepted to a school you LOVE and that you are looking forward to May 1st and the domino effect and hoping that it goes your way.

soozievt,

I was waitlisted for PSU. I was wondering if you could offer me some advise on how to move up on this. Also can you just provide me a general guideline on how the waitlist process works. Thank you so much, I appreciate your time.

You are right mtdude, but singing actress is from last year's auditions. I believe she is now enrolled at another school.
