We live in California so I do understand your concern regarding distance. Flights to Pittsburgh are not easy with few non stops. We just booked a non stop flight to see her perform in November and I'm chomping at the bit to see her.
We have gotten use to it and of course do the usual calling, texting daily. Our d is a MT/Dance major and is very happy there with her best friend and roommate an acting major. That's what makes it ok for us knowing she is thriving and learning.
If it gets down to it and you need more info I'm sure I can connect your d with her to get the "real scoop"
