Media Studies

Has anybody had any experience with this concentration? I've looked at the website and am planning a visit in the fall but was wondering if any CCers have any information on it as I am quite interested

There are a couple on here....I'm not one of them, but the media studies major is especially strong because of its ties to the entertainment industry (being so close to Hollywood). Someone else can jump on with more specifics.

Do any aspiring print journalists major in Media Studies? Or is it mostly film and photography oriented?

I'm not a Media Studies major, but I'm considering a minor in it. I like the program. This fall Media Studies is going to officially become a department at Pomona so that's good. I'm taking an Intro course right now and I like it.

So yeah, I don't have a lot of experience with Media Studies, but the fact that it's becoming a department at Pomona is a big plus.

Media studies majors go on to do all sorts of things (Among MS majors, a couple I knew last year went to Google, law/biz school seems popular, entertainment industry, ...lots of places).

Because Pomona is a liberal arts college, not everyone majoring in a subject will fall into that specific field. (i.e. Math majors going to acting school, molecular-bio majors going into consulting, physics majors going to law school, etc. aren't that uncommon).

Can anyone say a little bit more about what this Interdisciplinary Media Studies program is all about at Pomona? Is it a good program to consider if I'm interested in film/journalism/media studies, but also econ? Any students that are currently studying Media Studies here?

Foxhound, you're best off looking on the website for specific details about the IMS program. To answer your question, yes I think it is generally a good program. I'm an economics major and a media studies minor so if you wanted to combine economics you could do something similar to what I'm doing.

So, since the Media Studies is an interdisciplinary program, can a student at any of the claremont schools participate in it?
