Cama, I was wondering how your daughter did at Pratt this first semester? She must have gotten her grades by now.

She was pretty happy wth her grades. 4 credit drawing class A-, and all other studio classes between B+ and A-, with an A- in English. Her lowest grade was in art history; C. this was not totally unexpected as this was her toughest class. It is difficult to keep up with all the studio work and keep the grades up in the liberal arts classes. Overall GPA 3.3 which she was told is very good for first semester foundation year. She has the same profs this semester except for two, Art History and English. She thinks English will be harder and her Art History prof better ( though she liked last semester's Art History prof). She is already planning for next year. Will be switching majors and willl be living in campus apartment. If I remember correctly the campus tour did not include the campus apartments so if you want to see them you will have to specifically ask. Now I have to finish digging out from the blizzard. UGH!!!

That sounds very good, Cama. Amazing how the foundation year at Pratt seems nearly identical to the one at RISD. Three studios, art history, English. RISD does have that wintersession break in addition to the two semesters.

One thing that we found is that high grades don't mean anything (unless they're an indicator of mastery of the material, and hence qualification to proceed to the next level). I imagine that if someone is going to apply to an MFA program then BFA grades might be a factor, but I suspect that in that case except at the extreme it won't be grades so much as a portfolio that counts. In the working world, nobody is going to ask for your grades. They're looking for your skills and (again) your portfolio.

I hope you didn't get buried by too much snow. We had only about a foot in my part of Michigan.

Actually Pratt foundation year has four studios... Light Color and Design, Drawing, 3D and 4D, English and Art History. Not all studio classes are taken for the same amount of credits. Total credits for each semester is 18. I imagine RISD is the same in that respect. Drawing is 4 credits I am not sure how the rest of the studio credits are distributed. The liberal arts courses are 3 credits each.

I still have the names of the restaurants you recommended and plan to go th them when we have a chance.

Thanks. At RISD, it was drawing, 2D and 3D as studios. They didn't have a separate color course (I know that Cooper does) but color theory was included in 2D (I think that's the one). Each of the studios was an all-day course (9 to 5 or so, with lunch break).
