Hmmm, shall I order DD a new hoodie: UWSOM- Harvard of the West, we'll go with a crimson hoodie with a bug huskie on the back

Heck I thought the harvard of the west reference was to their ranking in us news for primary care as #1 vs. hsom's #1 ranking in research.

Didn't mean to cause any controversy. I said "To me UW = Harvard of the West."
Besides being #1 in primary care, its #10 in research. If you have ever used Zovirax or Valtrex you have Lawrence Corey Lawrence Corey, MD - Faculty - Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases - School of Medicine - University of Washington and the UW faculty to thank. (Yes you also should also thank Nobel prize winner Gertrude Elion) Anyway, rankings are subjective but its a wonderful school.

Congratulations to all the proud parents and happy kids!

I am freaking out!!

D only finished 2 of her 10+ schools' secondaries (about a month ago), and "finishing up" the rest.

So many people already got interviews and offers, she is so late, are we pretty much out of the game now?

I feel your pain! My D1 also applied quite late. Sent her primary in over Labor Day. Did her seconadries in late Sept to mid-October. I think she hurt her chances quite badly.

She was very fortunate that our state school doesn't start interviewing until October and doesn't release decisions until March. She was accepted there and is now a second year there and doing well.

SpringShower,
Just hang on, no reason to panic, I heard about cases when people were accepted at the end of summer! I know, it is not desirable and let's hope that everything will be just fine. Make sure that you are positive and smiling around your D., she needs this smile, not much more you can do to support her, just listen, nod and say few nice words....

SS- if she is a strong candidate and does not get any interview invites, then yes, she likely applied too late. But don't panic yet, there is nothing you can do anyway so try not to stress it, some schools do interview much later than others so a lot depends on her list.

My DD just talked to someone the other day who is just finishing up their secondaries, she tried not to react with, "YOU WHAT?!?!" That posted due date on the websites can be very misleading

Frankly, why would any top 10 program want to be Harvard of the west, south, or north?

I don't think Stanford or UW ever want to be Harvard of the west. They are superior to Harvard in a lot of areas and don't need to be any other school in some region.

I am completely clueless about MD application, just trusted D will handle it. Unfortunately, it turned out to be like this. Sigh.

Thank you all for the nice words.

SpringShower,

I used to be completely clueless about MD application too. That is is why I hang out here in order to learn something about the process, even though I rarely pass on what I have learned to my child who is in the trench himself. (DS once teased me that I had been obsessed about the question of whether biochemistry would be considered as a chemistry course or a biology one in MD application for 4 years! I am pretty sure, but still not 100 percents sure, it is the former for most med schools now.)

Isn't Ronald Reagon who said this: "Trust, but verify." Even if you yourself does not meddle with this, just knowing it to a certain extent (but still keep your mouth shut by not nagging) could go a long way to calm yourself down.

SpringShower - I did not even know about College Confidential when D was in college. (I found it for S years later.) According to what I read here, she did almost everything 'wrong'. She took the MCAT in August before her senior year, applied to only one med school (I believe in October?), and I have no idea when she did her secondary... And today she is a medical school graduate, a doctor, in her first year of residency. She is happy, but says they 'own' her. So it all worked out. I will send your D positive thoughts. And for you - a big hug.

Wishing all your sons and daughters all the best.
