So I'm starting college applications in 2 months and I was wondering if my major will matter to medical schools when applying. I personally want to major in art studio at a UC while still finishing up all the required classes for med school, because it's a major I'm interested in and it might be easier to get accepted into the UC of my choice, such as UC Davis. Will this hinder my application to med schools later on?

No. But the issue you might consider is that studio majors (art, architecture, music performance, photography, etc.) take up enormous amounts of time and may not leave you enough time for doing well in your pre med coursework.

Also many med school have demonstrated a preference for more academic majors. (Art history, for example rather than art.)

You should also be aware that pre-med requirements are changing and you may be required to take coursework beyond what's currently expected. More chem, plus social sciences--which may put a squeeze on your ability to complete your major + pre-reqs in 4 years. You should consult the pre-med advisor at your UC.

The only concern would be that you ahve chosen very very time consuming major. I believe that you will end up spending many more hours in art studio than you anticipated.

I would think that with the new requirements it would make it much harder to pick something that isnt a bio or chem orientated major. its around 60 semester credits for all of requirements while trying to fit in a major and get the gen ed all done would be pretty challenged I'd imagine.

^Music major/minor might work. But it will work only for those with interest in music and some background. And again, Music performance would be way too time consuming, while Music Composition is doable. Some choose Business majors, business is not that time consuming, others "language" major. One of D's friends (still old requirements though) graduated with triple majors Zoology/Spanish/Latin studies. While last 2 are related, they were completely unreleated to her maim major that took care of all re-reqs. This girl was fluent in Spanish before college.
However, being an artist will not make it less time consuming in college as far as I know. All art classes are very time consuming even for those with art background beyond HS program (private lessons,.....etc.)
