Sakky: I of course agree with you on the facts presented, but I'd prefer we keep the tone here more mellow and that we not get personal.
Self delusion, however, is permitted.

I don't think I have gotten personal. If you read my posts in context, you should notice that I never directed a single jab at anybody specifically.

However, I do got frustrated when people come to a discussion board supposedly seeking advice, but in reality having already made up their minds about what they are going to do, and are just looking for somebody to be their cheerleader and their yes-man. I won't do it.

If you think thats the only shool (SIU) I'm going to apply or even have the slightest possible chance of being accpeted, you're a moron. Look, I know I asked for your opinion, and thats your opnion... now if your that arrogant to even say I have little or no chance to get into a med school you're an ignorant fool. Taking the low GPA of 3.61, which could probably be even higher, and couple that with a 36 MCAT score and I haave jsut as good a chance as anyone.

PSedrishMD, would you be able to comment on my chances? I'm not sure if you didn't catch my post earlier...here are the stats:

- GPA: 3.86 unweighted, 4.15-4.2 weighted (15 AP's and honors - toughest)
- SAT I: 1500; SAT ii's: 750s on 2 of them
- Cycling Team (7 hrs/week/every week of the year)
- Speech and Debate Team (5 hrs/week/35 weeks)
- Around 500 hours of community service, helping day workers and using Spanish skills to translate what they're saying (I'm not from Mexico though) and also time at Hospital
- Advanced Percussion (3 hrs/week/every week of the year)
- Started an organization (internationally recognized) which helps needy children in my homeland of India. The organization's helped ~50-100 needy kids with college scholarships. Currently, the organization is moving to also provide clothing, medicine, general funds for disadvantaged youth. Started the non-profit organization by myself. It takes up about 20-25 hours/week and occassional trips to the country since there's about 10 part-time employees in the organization - This is pretty much my biggest EC and 'hook' for the colleges, in my opinion.

Could I get into any programs and if so, which ones? (I really want to go to George Washington University's program)

Your numbers are of course very good and I'm sure you're going to be competitive at most places. Good luck!

So, Mr. Patel, you are assuming that you are going to get a 36 on your MCAT, "just like that"? And which schools, pray tell, other than SIU, do you think you're going to get into? I see that you have conveniently dodged my question about whether you honestly think you will probably (as in over 50% chance) get into SIU. So then name some other medical school in the US where you think you will probably get admitted. Name it. Since you're so confident in your chances, then you should have no problem in naming the schools that you are so sure you will be admitted into.

Look, you asked for people's opinions, we gave it, and now you're upset because we didn't say what you wanted us to say. If you don't like the answer, then don't ask the question. It's not just me. It's also psedrishmd, it's celebrian25, and it's basically everybody else who gave their opinion.

And one more thing, answer this question for me. If you have already made up your mind and you've already convinced yourself that you are going to get in, then why the heck are you here on CC asking about whether you will get in? It seems to me that you just want somebody to tell you exactly what you want to hear. So who really needs to get a life? If you don't like the answer, fine, don't ask the question.

Personally, Mr Patel, you're just too obstinate for my likes. I'm tired of you complaining because you don't have the best chances. Yes, you have a chance. No, it's not a great one. Take our opinions as you will, but they are ours.

This post is starting to become a bickering post more than a premed post.

Mr. Patel, it's really quite simple. Do you really want other people's opinions, or are you just looking for somebody to tell you want you want to hear? You asked for honest opinions, and we gave them, and now you don't like it. Well, if you didn't really want our honest opinions, then why did you ask for them?

Fine, Mr. Patel, if it makes you feel better, here goes. You are the best premed candidate I have ever seen, and you are absolutely 100% guaranteed admission at not only your beloved SIU, but at every other medical school in the country. In fact, every one should not only be admitting you, but they should be giving you a full scholarship with a 6-figure yearly stipend because you are clearly such an outstanding candidate that every medical school should be begging to have you grace their presence. Is that what you want to hear?

Look, maybe next time before you go around posting questions, you should email us privately and tell us exactly what you want us to say, so that when you then post a question, we are ready to tell you exactly what you want to hear. If you don't do that, then we can only give you our honest opinions, but you clearly don't want that. So write us up, tell us exactly what you want us to say, and we'll say it. Otherwise, don't ask the question if you're not prepared to hear the answer.

People on this board know how to bring someone down....Calm down guys!! Just try to get the best possible GPA and MCAT and you will get into some medical school. In the US it is actually easier to get into a medical school than say in India where my dad went to medical school and then did his residency at Cornell. Less than 1% of candidates make it to medical school in India. People in the US have it better, take adavantage of this fact.

Well, let's see, Mr. Patel has managed to insinuate that we are 'arrogant' and are 'morons', and you're accusing us of bringing someone down?

Look, the guy asked for our opinions. We gave them. And now he doesn't like what we said. Well, if he didn't like the answer, he shouldn't have asked the question.

Mr. Patel seems to be all about "well if i get this" Or "IF i get that." Who really cares about what you MIGHT get. My advice is to get off these boards where you obviously spend too much time and actually go study so that you can ensure that you will get those grades. You seem to be a real dreamer, worried too much about years ahead of you. You need to concentrate more on the present and come back in a few years and forward your acceptance letter and say "IN YOUR FACE SAKKY", so that we can all respond, "we still dont give a damn!"

Now that was the crude, but truthful, part of my post, however, there's more. Becoming a doctor is more than about grades or even complete knowledge of our bodies mechanisms. You need a self confidence, not an ignorant self confidence which you displayed by completely sidestepping facts, but you need a self confidence where you dont seem to go around begging for others approval. If you make it into and out of medical school, you will be THE leader of the hospital. Asking for a second opinion or even third,...very acceptable, but chasing down people and asking loaded questions where you already know what you want them to say, is simply childish.

Do you know what my mother says to me practically everyday which i find extremely annoying..... "You're very intelligent, but there are probably so many kids out there smarter than you. The competition is tough, so nothing is guarenteed." And this is what she says to her straight A student, her own child!! Mr.Patel,...even IF you barely made the average, what makes you think that there isn't so many other people out there better than you. Now this is just common sense. There are THOUSANDS of pre-meds out there, and THOUSANDS get top grades, and THOUSANDS didn't screw up in their first year of college. And now, when there are only a few seats available, everything counts. Every minute detail, because in reality, what seperates you (generally) from everyone else might be a .005, it might be that one class that was a little more difficult, it might be 20 extra volunteer hours.

No one has a good chance, and harshly enough, you have an even worse one.

Is Brown considered a good undergrad school? And does majoring in humanities make that much of a difference in admissions? What if I really like science ...
