@Rose2014, A palm's width plus like an inch or two is what's acceptable. @0V0XODeerfield16, I know that returners find out where they are living June 29th, but new students are placed in dorms after us, so I think you should know within a week or so of that. The green key system will be a bit different this year, but I think that they'll write a letter or something like that to let you know who they are.

What do you like best about Deerfield and what would you change if you could?

There are honestly so many things that I like about Deerfield and yes, some things that I would change so let's see here...
One of my favorite things about Deerfield is our rivalry with Choate because some of my fondest memories of freshmen year come from not only our "Choate Day" in the fall where every fall sport plays Choate but from the sense of community that you can feel and notice from all of the cheering and battle cries ringing throughout the campus! Deerfield has a great sense of community and school spirit that could rival with the best of them! We really just love to cheer everyone on from thirds teams to our varsity teams...everyone is supported!
Ok now here is the harder part because I believe that anything that I can think of as a "con" about being a Deerfield student doesn't really pertain to Deerfield directly...it's really just typical high school problems, you know? Like of course there will be moments when you may not feel like you fit in, you don't like a certain class, or whatever else it may be...but that's just life. So I would have to say that if I could change Deerfield I would probably make sit down meals a bit less frequent (just a bit because don't get me wrong...I love them, I really do) and we also have this rule about leadership positions that says if you have one major leadership position role you cannot run for another...but I feel that if you're qualified you should be able to because someone who is a peer counselor would probably also make a really great proctor or at least that is my logic.

I was an all A student throughout junior high (93-100) which made me eligible for a couple honor societies (that performed acts of community service) and also got me recognized for things like Duke TiP. My school did not have very many sports but I danced and also played tennis before I got to Deerfield. Photography was also and still is a big part of my life. At my old school I did a lot of work for our yearbook and got a special recognition for that and at Deerfield I take pictures for our newspaper which is a lot of fun.
So yeah--didn't really do anything particularly special or spectacular. I just showed tons of interest through my essays and interviews and I was very close to my teachers so it's safe to assume that their recommendations were good.

And now: why I chose Deerfield. No matter how many times I get asked this question (I'm a tour-guide so if you're stopping by for a tour let me know!) I feel like my answer is so cliché but I just feel like when you find the right school--you'll know. As for me and
Deerfield, it was my first choice since the summer after 7th grade when I began my research. I loved the idea of sit down meals, how historical it was...and even the fact that we don't have "an official mascot" set Deerfield apart from the rest for me. But, that's just my opinion. Some like a large student body so they many choose Andover and others may prefer Choate (for reasons unheard of)
^that was a joke. Choate is a great school.
But seriously you need to just sit down and make both a list of what you would want in a school and a pros and cons list for each school you're interested in and it just so happened that in my eyes Deerfield had no cons.

I'll be an incoming sophomore this fall and was wondering if anyone could give me and idea of what to wear to the disco? Is there any unexpected things I should pack?

I absolutely love this question...the disco that we have at the beginning of the year is so much fun and is a great way to start off a school year.
So for disco you honestly just want to wear the craziest most neon items of clothing you can find. I would recommend shorts because it can get pretty hot with so many people dancing around but like I said really just go all out and be as bright and crazy as possible. As for unexpected, if you have cool costume pieces you never know when you may be able to use them (halloween, other theme dances, etc) and if you have something crazy that is also GREEN it could be perfect for choate day!

If you have spare time, what can you do in the city of deerfield? What do you do on weekends? Is there a place to buy coffee or snacks outside of the school? Is there any shopping that students can walk to?
