Hmm. That’s a difficult question especially when things work so well here. It’s not a small place where you are isolated and not too large where you can get lost. It’s just the right size. The teachers are amazing as is the student body. This year we started a great program called connect4 to improve the contact across the grades and I think it is a brilliant idea, just in time for us freshmen. I would probably have the teachers give a little less homework without losing the quality of the Deerfield education. Teachers here are demanding and expect us to do our best work in accord with our motto “Be worthy of your heritage.”

what do you think really impressed DA about you while you were applying? what does the school look for in their applicants and what part of the application process should i really focus on? (like is there a part of the application process to school focuses on more than the other parts?)

okay and do a lot of people have their guidance counselor fill out the school report form...it says principal/counselor and i just always thought most people had their principal do it

Hopeful2board, The schools are looking for nice kids who can succeed at their school by making best use of what the school has to offer. In my view the important things are: 1. Great personality 2. Interview 3. Grades, 4. Recommendations, 5. Essays, 6. ECs, and 7. SSATs (nice to be above 85% for HADES). If you have sports, legacy hooks, you can be below average in some areas. I think I scored well across the board with no hooks. But you don’t have to do that to get in. To recap, they look at your whole file, not one or two things. Focus on doing your best in all areas.

Ehphant, There are some repeat freshmen, but I am not sure how many in total. I am also young for my grade, but I am doing well. If you can handle the academics, I don’t think you need to repeat. But if you feel you will benefit from repeating, by all means.

Helloel, Most of the time the guidance counselors do it, unless you happen to know the Principal well personally. But for schools, it makes no difference as long as you have a good recommendation from either.

helloel, Better sooner than later as you have to tell them eventually anyway and it gives them more time during the holidays to write a thoughtful recommendation without rushing.

Deerfield Academy, founded in 1797, is an independent, co-educational boarding school located in Western Massachusetts. Explore our rigorous academic programs, athletic prowess, and the beauty, drama, and rhythm of campus life.

Ask away. I have a few new Sophomore and Junior friends who might also answer your questions if you are applying for those grades.

How much sleep do you usually get? Were you worried about not getting in, or you were confident about your application

I usually get 8 to 9 hours of sleep as a freshman!
And as for the application...nothing s ever certain. While I was confident in the fact that I did the best I could on my application, you never know if you have a definite spot in the school. All you can do is your best and hope for the result to reflect your efforts!!

i recently toured and interviewed at deerfield and i absolutely loved it!!!! its my top school and im dying to get accepted there. However, when i was there my parents and i got the feeling that you kind of need a connecction or alumni as a relative to get in ...we kind of felt it was a little bit not stuck up but very prestigious..! we are also applying for financial aid cause my dads business has gone down the past few years but like we are technically "middle upper class" but according to my dads accountant it does not appear like that in the banks so i do thing that i can fit in with people at deerfield because i am/was spoiled. did i get the wrong or right impression from deerfield? i still really loved it though
