Thanks for the very useful thread. I am sending my 14 year old with most items listed here, except for a shaving kit. At what age do some other kids typically start shaving? I recall that I was 18 before I first shaved.

My son was 15 when he started shaving. The boys at Exeter usually participate in No Shave November and also February to prepare for Moustache March. :-)

My younger daughter fenced in a Y12 (1999-2002 birth years) tournament yesterday and one of the boys she beat had a mustache.

I was thinking of a shaving kit as a repository for toothbrush, floss and zit cream as much as a place for a razor. My boy would NOT use one of those shower totes--girl stuff in his book--so he needs something to tote all the small stuff in and out of the bathroom. My kid is still in the fuzzy haired stage of life; an electric razor, used every few days, is all he needs.

I agree with those who observe that the list of things to bring is ridiculously long...but I still think it's valuable information. I wouldn't dream of urging anyone to look at this as a checklist or to-do list or shopping list but I would urge people to look at it for ideas and reminders as they do their own planning.

For all of you going to boarding school for the first time this fall, this is something you might want to look through. It has a lot of great ideas, but also bad ones. Take it with a grain of salt and use it as inspiration. Also, start shopping for stuff you know you will need now. Shower caddy, any decorations, etc, b/c you don't want to complete with college students for a limited supply. But don't buy everything. Make sure how big your room is and such.

Hey, so why does OP suggest that no halogen lamps should be brought? I have a halogen desk lamp.

@celery
Many schools consider halogen lamps a fire hazard and do not allow them in student rooms because the bulbs get very hot and can set fire to papers or cloth placed near or over the lamp, or if it falls over onto a pillow, rug or bedding.
Check with your school before you bring halogen - but you might want to consider
the newer, much safer LED lamps in any case, which work well and are inexpensive(buy at Lowe's or on-line).

@celery,
2prepMom, you're spot on, but I just wanted to add that many schools are trying to be more environmentally conscious, and halogen lamps aren't that eco-friendly.

Does Andover have a small store on campus to get basic things, such as aspirin?
