St. Mark's traditional athletic rival is the younger Groton School. St. Mark's high school football rivalry since 1886 with Groton School is one of the oldest athletic rivalries in the United States, following the Andover-Exeter rivalry. The two schools have met in regularly scheduled athletic contests for more than a century. St. Mark's traditionally has a "Groton Day" celebrating this rivalry, just as Groton has a "St. Mark's Day" with the same sorts of festivities.
On Nov. 14, SMS Lions take on the Groton Zebras! and they will honor retiring faculty member and football coach Henry Large during the half time. he began working at St. Mark’s in 1965. He is the heart and soul of the tradition of St. Mark’s football, having coached in the program for all but three of his 43 dedicated years in Southborough.
