We recently spoke with a coach at a NESCAC school who wants my son to take a PG year... so he will apply in his senior year to both college and PG. This way when he takes his PG year he can concentrate on his sport (ice hockey) and academics and not worry about applying to college. He will be graduating from a competitive private school and hopes to go to Hotchkiss, Choate, Andover or one like that. The coach said that ALL hockey players either do a PG year or a year of Junior Hockey. And since we are talking D3, there is no money involved here. AND my son is completely aware that he could arrive on campus after PG year, and not be played... That is true with any sport though, even highly sought after D1 athletes.

^^ Bdavis - I dont know if you are completely new to CC, or have been on for a while and just decided to post for the first time above - if its the former - read the Athletic Admissions thread in the Specialty Admissions portions. It truly is chock full of very useful information presented by very knowledgeable parents who can help with advice, etc. Unlike some of parents on the BS thread, the majority of posters there are truly informed and will help without any hidden agenda.
In terms of listening to a NESCAC coach - of course you know to cross-check one coaches's statements several times and not to rely on any one coach' opinion.
