I have boys and have been looking at single sex education and co-ed. The two schools we are looking at are Gilman and McDonogh. Does anyone have opinions about either of these schools specifically and also single sex education versus co-ed for boys? Thanks for any info.

My children went to McDonogh and we are very happy with the choice. When we moved to Baltimore area, we were fortunate to get admission in these two excellent schools but for various reasons we selected McDonogh. I can give you my view if you can send me a contact email.

I have boys in Baltimore also. Those are my top 2 schools. Let me know what you decide. I'm leaning towards Gilman because of sports, distance to my home, and single sex atmosphere.

I love mcd's security and boarding options in hs.

OP, to your question about opinions on single sex vs coed education for boys, this is covered thoroughly in Leonard Sax's book, Boys Adrift. It is a good read for parents of boys for reasons that go beyond just boarding school. The author doesn't pull punches and names names of some schools, both pro and con.

That said, I've found that a parent may have various opinions and preferences, but it is also important to listen to one's child. DS is now very happy at a coed school. Depending on your boys, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that different schools would suit each one.

I could not send a private email also due to limitations. My two boys went to McDonogh. We were fortunate to get admission at both McDonogh and Gilman when we moved to this area. Both are excellent schools but we selected McDonogh as it offered the following benefits: School bus including late bus for atheltics/EC participation, Balanced program for academics/sports/EC, Good lunch program -- lots of opprotunities in music, leadership and college admissions. We also preferred to send the boys to co-ed to reflect the real world experience. Faculty and parents are very supportive and have a good multi-cultural atmosphere. Hope this helps.

I have a close friend that is a McDonogh grad. He went on to UVa, and great success on Wall Street and other ventures. Big thumbs up to the school. Laid a great foundation.
