Thanks for sharing your story! I read the whole thing -- and it's funny, our experiences are really similar. (Except, of course, that I'm already a wizened old maid from the class of '14 )

I think I have a lot of the same interests as you -- I want to be a writer, but like you I'm into economics too, and that might be my major -- but in a lot of ways, our stories are flipped. I always told myself Princeton was my top choice and Columbia my second top choice ("in the off chance I would get in"), but in retrospect, my heart was set on Columbia. I only wanted to go to Princeton for its creative writing program and its overall academics, and incidentally, I think it's interesting you list those same things as your reasons for wanting Columbia.

In the end: Princeton accepted me, and Columbia is the one that waitlisted me. I don't know how things would've turned out if I had put more of my love into my Columbia application, or if I hadn't turned down Columbia's waitlist (I did that because I felt unjustifiably annoyed with Columbia for waitlisting me, but definitely also because I didn't want to second-guess, which I would've done if Columbia did offer me admission).

Anyway, my point is that it's funny how these things work out, and you're right, it's hard at this point to grasp their significance. And also, for everyone else on this thread, that Princeton and Columbia are really NOT that different (seriously, just ask a random Princetonian how many close friends they have at Columbia, and the other way around). Good luck with Columbia, which I'm sure will be amazing (really), and with writing and whatever else

Also, total side note for any Princeton '15ers lurking here: there are actually a lot of opportunities to go to "the city," either on weekends or for internships or to see Broadway shows for just $25 (including transportation) with a res college, if that's what appeals to you

I am a parent and I think you are a pretty awesome guy and I think you will be headed for great things if you keep to what you really want to do. Thanks for the stressy story. I hope life is smoother for you now.

I guess this post is a little old, but I somehow stumbled upon it anyways (I searched "waitlist" as in the SAT waitlist, forgetting that colleges had that too). I've already applied to all my schools and now I could just absolutely kick myself because my stats are all incredibly similar to yours (except I didn't take the subject tests because I decided I wasn't going to apply to any Ivies), and like you, I've ALWAYS wanted to go to Princeton. Except the problem with that is that I live in south Georgia and attend a school of less than 1,000 people.
I guess it's easy to say it doesn't matter what school you attend if you're a Columbia student...

Great post by OP. Goes to show that there is no harm and a big upside in giving top schools a shot even if your grades/test scores are solid but not spectacular.

What you said about chance threads are definitely true: Don't make one, don't read them. They're useless, because other people really can't judge whether or not you get in. Ask technical questions. Great story, great advice!

Wow, this thread took on a life of its own...

hi This is a really awesome story and great insight too! I find this story really inspiring cos I was recently deferred by my dream school (an ivy too). I really poured my heart and soul into the application and the result simply shattered my confidence. I started to procrastinate, not wanting to start on any other apps. Then I ran into this one-year-old thread. You may not see this but thank you so much @RockySterling for sharing the story. it really gives me strength to carry on with the stressful app period. And to all other fellow CC ers: good luck to you all and we will all end up somewhere great!

I've been lurking in this forum for a while but i get an account simply to post a reply here. Thanks again for telling this amazing story and good luck in Columbia!
