If you go to a school like Princeton, most AP credit doesn't matter at all. The only ones that matter are math / sciences and a foreign language (foreign language gets you out of the language requirement and into more advanced courses, math / science APs can get you into more advanced courses and might satisfy requirements for your major).
So having taken the AP comp gov exam won't help you at all once you get to Princeton, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't take the class - it might help you get in, and the knowledge you gain might help you in princeton classes. I'm a big advocate for taking classes that you're genuinely interested in, especially during senior year.
