Help me!

I'm currently a high school freshman and I was just wondering if being in algebra 1 will hurt my chances of being accepted into a highly selective college.my friends are taking algebra 2 and algebra 2 honors as freshman and I feel really behind and kinda stupid. I know colleges look at other things besides what classes you take , I'm just worried that algebra 1 isn't the most rigorous class I could be taking but it was the only I was allowed to take.

Taking Algebra I isn't going to hurt your chances of getting into Princeton... Algebra I is a requirement at most, if not *all,* high schools in order to graduate. Yes, schools like Princeton look at the type of classes you take, but I don't think many schools have an option for 'AP Algebra I' or something similar (not many freshmen take AP courses anyway). Instead of fretting about it now, why don't you plan for next year and see what type of advanced courses are offered at your school in subjects you are genuinely interested in. And if you are really worried about your math placement, also plan ahead and see if you will be eligible for honours next year.

One thing to keep in mind is that schools, including Princeton, will assess your improvement (both in terms of grades and of the rigor of your courseload) over your 4 years in high school. In fact, many schools tend not to look at your freshman year with much weight, as they know that freshmen sometimes need time to adjust. I would say not to worry right now, but PLEASE tell your parents not to pressure you too hard. It really can be a source of unbearable stress, and it certainly won't help you appreciate high school (or even do well in courses). On the other hand, if Princeton is a goal that YOU want to set, then this can be a source of motivation. Still, you are young, so keep and open mind!
