Are likely letters definite?

Currently I am being recruited by Princeton to play a sport at the University. The coach has told me that once I hand in my application, he can run it by admissions and if approved, can have a likely letter sent to me by October. My question is since Princeton doesn't have any early action/decision, if I receive a likely letter, does that mean I'll definitely get an acceptance letter once they're all sent out? I know that my grades must stay the same and I must not get into any trouble but I'm worried that likely letters don't follow through. I have heard stories of athletes getting them and then later being denied and not knowing what to do about college afterwards. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Princeton's athletic likely letters are very dependable as long as you don't have a precipitous drop in grades, academic dishonesty issues, etc.

With his Princeton LL in hand, my son refrained from making other applications. He will be a freshman in the fall.

Good luck!

They are very dependable, but I would say that you should still go through the application process with as many other schools as you would have without it, especially in the case that he can't get you the likely letter!

Yes, likely letters are quite definite, but there is always a tiny chance something could happen: you could bomb a class, or a teacher could wreak havoc with one of your grades, etc. So I, too, suggest you apply to a few others to have as backups.

Also, is there any chance you could be caught drinking underage, DUI, or in posession of other illegal substances? Be very careful if you want the likely letter to survive your counselor's Mid Year and Final Reports.

Congratulations on being recruited, but it is good to keep in mind that the process can change from week to week if the coach is courting other prospects. He/she will be reranking the recruits as time goes by. Be sure to have other schools and other coaches ready to take you if P'ton changes their mind. Best of luck.
