Essays: I think they were good, except my "Why Reed" was almost embarrassingly enthusiastic (I don't remember exactly, but I believe the word "awesome" was used...as in, "Thesising sounds awesome!")
Recomendations: Good! I really liked the one from my english teacher, wonderfully perceptive. The counselor rec was probably not very good, but we have one counselor for 500+ kids, and most of his energy goes towards students who are on the verge of dropping out

Essays: My essays definitely helped me. They were a lot better than my ACT/SAT scores would suggest.

ECs: I don't feel like typing out the whole list, but I've done a lot of volunteer work, have had two work internships (one non-profit, the other at a law firm), co-editor of school newspaper, run a club at school, as well as an organization outside of school. Plus some other little things.

Interview: It was my first interview, but it was ok. Not spectacular though.

I'm Hispanic, that definitely helped me. And I go to, what some may say to be, a really prestigious private school, so that also must've helped.

Honestly, I am pretty surprised I got accepted. My grades and test scores were pretty low, but I guess they believed I was a good fit.

Essays: Alright I guess. Common app essay was a (heavy) modification of my UChicago essay, and my Why Reed essay talked about two people I've known who are linked to Reed – my amazing 8th grade English teacher who's an alumna and my friend who is a freshman at Reed.

EC's: Lots of theatre, including the lead in a student-run community production. Also mock trial, co-founded an improv troupe at my school, and lots of violin. I do the pit orchestra for all my school's musicals (since I can't sing, haha).
Interview: I thought it was pretty good. We actually took longer than we were supposed to.
Recommendations: I'm not sure, never saw any of them. My counselor rec was probably alright. I'm starting to think that maybe my teacher recs were really good, considering where I've gotten in. I also got a supplemental rec from the director of the theatre camp/program (non-profit) that I've been a part of during the past two summers.

Location: Chevy Chase, Maryland (literally right next to Washington, DC... my house is the last in Maryland on my street)
School Type: Public, decent-sized, and very good. Not so sure about competitive... I guess there's competition at the top, but not so much anywhere else.

Oh, and the writing sample! Mine was an essay I wrote in AP English Lit on King Lear. Maybe Reed liked that I sent that in... haha

Aaaaaaah I'm incredibly excited. My dad isn't very enthusiastic about Reed, since to him it's just another small liberal arts college, and we have plenty of those on the East Coast within driving distance. But I do know that in the end it's my decision, and I'm prepared to jump through whatever hoops I must... I think the odds that I'll choose Reed are very good!

Essays: Decent for Common App, not particularly inspired. "Why Reed?", on the other hand, was a risky one...it was a love letter, of all things! Soooo embarrassing now that I think about it...

Graded writing sample: Oddly enough, this was my least favorite part of the application. All of the decent, typed ones were not commented on, so I sent a paper from fall semester (junior year) that just screamed, "I'm pants at writing analytical papers! I'm a bundle of inexperience!"

Recommendations: I haven't asked to see them, but I think that my first teacher's rec. letter was fantastic! (I firmly believe it was 75% responsible for landing me a scholarship at another school) The other was probably great, but not as glowing. Counselor's letter was probably good.

No but really, if I could give any advice for people planning to apply next year it would be to definitely have an overnight before applying. Make friends with as many people in admissions as possible. Be prepared to blow away your interviewer. The writing is extremely important. My standardized testing scores were pretty below the average for Class of 2012, but I am pretty sure it was my writing samples and personality that saved me.
