RPI Merit Scholarships

JessephenJessephen Posts: 132Registered User Junior Member
How is RPI for giving merit money? My son was a Rensselaer Medalist so was offered that scholarship (he ended up at WPI), but my daughter hadn't even considered RPI until this (senior) year, so the Medal had already gone to somebody else in her school. She really liked RPI on her visit and wants to major in Arch. She has good stats (CR SAT a little low @ 670 but 780 M and has only had one A- throughout all of HS) and good extracurricular activities. How generous are they with Merit $$ to non-medalists?

I got $10,000 in merit scholarships to RPI after being accepted ED I.

From what I've heard, $10,000 is the norm with the merit scholarships, although I am sure they go much higher.

    What about grants?

Grants I got $12,500 in... but you have to pay those back eventually so they aren't really "scholarships" in my book

I thought loans were the things you payed back.

It looks like the alumni scholarship, the leadership award, and the academic competetiveness grant are all merit awards - are they all renewable? Can I ask what your stats are and whether you are male of female.

The alumni scholarship is need based, the leadership is merit based.

I'm a male. Stats? SATs: 1890 Gpa: 3.67 I did a lot of internship work and had a good load of extracurricular activities. Essay portion is VERY important, so tell your daughter to work on that if she's applying. The financial aid will depend alot on your EFC and your level of involvement with the fiancial aid office. If don't communicate with them, nothing gets done. If you do, you can most likley find a way to cover all expenses with student loans and such.
