I'm definitely looking to apply ED to Rice for the Class of 2017. It's been my dream since I visited two years ago to attend Rice. I would be applying to the Engineering School probably as BME.
I'm planning on applying ED to Brown for engineering (probably chem). I actually live in Houston, about 20 miles from campus and naturally I've been there many times :P It's just a beautiful place in a wonderful city. You really can't go wrong.
I'm going on campus, but that's cause I live there. I've heard that if you're passionate about going there and are good at making small talk you'll be fine
Now that I'm done with all the craziness that is college visits I can finally start working on my supplement essays. The ironic thing is Rice is the only school that I'll be visiting that I haven't been to yet. So is life I guess. Anyways, I haven't actually started the whole essay yet, but I have a word document open with all the questions and I just type any thoughts I have so that in a few days I can look them all over and have a good idea of what to write. The only one I'm holding off on is my why Rice essay. I'll do that one after I visit.
Also, how is the question asking what new perspective you could bring to the community different from the common app question (#5) that asks about "what you would bring to the diversity in a college community"?
So you need to:
1) Find a unique life experience that helped to establish a specific trait
2) Talk about how that trait would affect the Rice community?
Good thing we have a long time to work on this, I always have trouble with these kind of essays.
Wow. It's so surreal that the 2017 thread is already up and running. It feels like just yesterday that I was here, freaking out over these things.
I wish y'all the best of luck with the Rice admissions. It was certainly a roller coaster. Don't forget to enjoy your senior year! (:

The biggest difference is probably that you have to answer the supplement's question but can write about absolutely anything you want for the Common App essay
Alrighty. Well, I didn't answer that on the common app essay, but that sucks for anyone who did since they're going to need to have two answers for the same question. Right now I have small seedlings for my ideas, but really not progress yet
The perspective essay is killing me. I've spent many late nights thus far brainstorming ideas that eventually end up in the trash. I think I have a good start with my Why Rice, though.
Hi! Are you all applying ED? My twin sister and I are applying RD to Rice, and I love it! I'm definitely applying as a BMEngineering major, and she's going to go for something more in the arts, but I think we'll both want to double major in theater or music. I'm so nervous to apply! Have you all only taken the ACT? I am taking it in October but so far we both only took the SAT once, as a practice without studying (she got a 2330, I got a 2140). I want to study this time and hope to break 2200, but she isn't going to take an me standardized tests (for obvious reasons haha). Do most students apply with an ACT score rather than an SAT score? I'm from the northeast, so I don't really know what's common in the south
