What is it like in general at Rice?

Anyone know the statistics in getting into medical school from Rice undergrad?

I don't know the specific numbers, but it says on their website that the acceptance rate is over 90%. Or maybe it said "about 90%;" I'm not sure. Either way, it's high.

I'm considering doing premed at Rice, and would also like to know the medical school acceptance rates from Rice undergrad.

Twenty8, I can't seem to find that page--can you (or any one reading this) give me a specific link for more information about premed at Rice?

It's not that I don't trust your answer, I just want to see concrete information and numbers from the Rice website itself instead of speculation.

is pre med a pretty popular major at rice?

also I know the page says 116 student applied and 102 were accepted. is that 116 who intended to apply? or 116 who already took the MCAT and scored high enough to apply?

Pre-med isn't a major; it's a group of recommended courses to take if you want to apply to medical school. Most pre-meds major in natural sciences, and thus end up taking the recommended courses as pre-reqs anyways.

You have to take the MCAT (for most med schools), so the 116 who applied probably all took it (I don't know about Rice/Baylor). There's no minimum score to apply, but the national avg. of accepted students is around 28 or 29.

Do a lot of people actually do well on the MCAT? because taking the MCAT and doing well enough on it is entirely different

I believe that Rice doesn't "screen" their med school applicants; in other words, anyone who wants to apply can. Some schools discourage all except their most successful students from applying. The page you reference says that 116 SENIORS applied to med school and 102 were accepted. Some of the 14 seniors who were not successful the first time may have applied to highly selective medical schools, and may apply (and be successful in getting admitted) the following year. Also, some Rice students work for several years and then apply to medical school.

tealover: I don't know the avg. MCAT at Rice, but I'd think national percentiles are available through AAMC.

I'd recommend not worry too much about it yet. I'm guessing your in HS, and the reality is that most kids who start out pre-med change their minds before the MCAT rolls around. Don't put too much pressure on yourself yet.

so what's the mcat average? i guess that information's not really available, but it speaks volumes for the rigor of the curriculum when compared to the national. i think colleges usually keep track of the highest scores each year though.

also! anyone majoring in biochem? any idea of how ridiculously hard it is? >.>

From what I've heard, a lot of people switch over from BioE to BioChem because BioE is one of the toughest majors (apparently EE/CE is the hardest). But that's not to say BioChem is easy, either.
Also, at Owl Day Dr. McDowell said that about 1/3 of Baylor College of Medicine's class each year is composed of Rice students. And if I remember right...
Last year 104 out of 112 people who applied to med school got accepted (about 92% acceptance rate). Over the past few years, the acceptance rate into med school has varied, averaging at about 88% and it reached 97% one year.
This is all from Dr. McDowell's speech on pre-med at Rice, which she gave this week at Owl Day and will likely repeat in the next couple of weeks.
