But Harvard, Princeton, and a few other schools decided to drop early decision this year; they were probably banking on the waitlist as a safety net for such an unpredictable year.

My friend (who doesn't have a CC account) said that he just got an e-mail from Rice that said they were extending the life of their waiting list to July 15th. He then had to re-submit his desire to remain on the waiting list. Did everyone on the waiting list get an e-mail like this or have some people been nixed?

oh forgot to mention the email said 7 people have been accepted so far:

In April, we requested permission to place your name on the waiting list as an alternate for Rice's class of 2012. We were pleased by your positive response and I am writing to update you on our current situation. Since May 1, seven students have been offered admission from the waiting list, and at present, the class is full.

In our earlier correspondence we indicated that we would close down Rice's waiting list on June 30. As you may have read in the newspaper and other media sources, there is an unusually high number of wait list offers going out from many of our peer institutions. Because of the lack of stability among the nation's most selective schools, Rice has decided to extend the life of the waiting list to July 15.

To update us on your current desire to remain on the waiting list or withdraw from it, please reply online with your login id () by May 30, 2008.

Sincerely,

Julie M. Browning
Dean for Undergraduate Enrollment

Yes, I believe there is still a chance. It looks like there might be some movement due to the very large number of people being taken off the Harvard and other ivy colleges waitlists. Probably not a huge number of people, but possibly a few.

Duke just announced that it is taking 200 off the waitlist! This is bound to have some effect on Rice as there is so much overlap in the two college communities...
