Off-Campus Housing for Transfers

Hey,

I'm a sophomore transfer student, and I've pretty much come to terms with the fact that I won't get on-campus housing. i've never tried to find an apartment or house, so I don't really know how long it takes to get one reasonably close to campus (since I probably won't have a car), but I imagine that I should be looking pretty hard right now.

A lot of housing becomes cheaper with roommates, and I know there are a couple of other transfer students on these boards. Is anyone else in the same boat?

I think theirs a link somewhere on the Rice website that links to a website where other students post for roommates/off campus housing. Not sure about it.

You never know ... my son is a sophomore and his roommate for on-campus housing will not be coming back next year so it's likely that he'll end up with a transfer student as his roommate.

With the way housing is going this year, though, it's just as possible that your son will end up with a freshman roommate.

Yeah... I'm a transfer too. I'm waiting for them to come through with that off-campus roommate matching thing. Till then, I don't know that there's much we can do. I think I remember they said the matches would come through in mid-July. I imagine there will be some movement with this housing business this week or the next.

I just saw this house on the Rice online housing guide. The ad says one bedroom - but the text says it is a three-bedroom duplex, so it is a good price in a great neighborhood only a few blocks from Rice. Maybe 3 of you transfer students here can get together and lease it! (I don't live in Houston and have no connection with the owner - I'm just trying to help you guys out! )
Rice Student Center Act fast though - good housing can move quickly

P.S> The "distance from Rice" is measured to the front of Rice on Main street, so that the online housing guide shows that this is more than a mile away from Rice. It really isn't. This property is only a few blocks away, close to the back end of Rice near the football stadium etc. Great location!

Anyone have a sense of the probability for ON-campus housing for transfer students?

Not very high, and if you do get it it won't be for a while, when some students drop out at the eleventh hour. Housing is not pretty this year. (Thanks, office of UG enrollment!)
