Freshman Seminar courses

Hello,
I was just reading General Announcements book I got a long time before in mail.
And I found this 'FSEM' section in course catalog.
Can anyone explain what are they? I have no experience in this college stuff at all and not even sure why do they have them(they are just same thing as some courses in HIST GERM or SPAN..etc.)
It seems like this FSEM is under Humanities section...which means distribution requirement D1! Did school design this FSEM to help people getting their D1 requirement done?
Thanks.

The Freshman Seminar courses are really neat. Their topics change and vary every semester and with every teacher. They are distribution credit not just strictly to help people get their D1s out of the way. However, they are courses with intriguing topics that more than just Academs might find interesting. Additional cool things about these classes is that you're with people your age so you meet more freshmen in all kinds of majors. Also the classes are small, capped around 15 or 20 so everyone gets a chance to discuss and debate. They're a great opportunity for any student. I advise you to take them if one seems particularly interesting to you.
