FA Package Finally!

dlbarberdlbarber Posts: 246Registered User Junior Member
We finally received the FA letter in the mail. A bit less RIT grant than I expected, but more TAP. I think we will send in the deposits and then talk to the FA people at the Accepted students Open House. I guess it never hurts to ask for a bit more...all they can do is say NO!

S's fin aid package included 10K in loans. Not sure he should accrue 40K or more in debt.

We also got that much in loans, but will probably only take 7. I want to hold the total loans to around 23,000 for the 4 years. My daughter who is graduating this year as a music teacher was able to hold hers to that, but she is going to a school that is half the cost. My oldest, who graduated from RIT as a Physician Assistant, had close to 40, 000 but she has a fantastic job and is able to pay the monthly payment with no problem. We knew her right out of school earning potential would be very high and pretty much had no doubt that she would have a job right away.
Fortunately, my parents started a small 529 plan for my kids that will help out, and we are counting on a bit in outside scholarships from our high school for this year.

My daughter hasn't heard yet.... Would appreciate if folks declared their merit and financial award amounts so that I could evaluate appropriately... Thx

We're still waiting on the financial aid info as well. It sure would be nice if all of the information was available so we could evaluate RIT properly.

Called Financial Aid yesterday. They checked my daughter's record and told me that they were still working on her award. We should get something in the mail by next week.

Don't agree to go and then ask for more financial aid. That's kind of like asking for a lower price after you bought the car from the used car dealer. Make it seem to financial aid that you have other options (if you have better financial aid from someone else, show them the paperwork - if not, ask/beg).

Actually the schools are well aware that you can pay your deposit and ask for a refund before May1st. We paid our deposit and after speaking to the FA people at the accepted students open house yesterday, we will be sending in an appeal/request letter. I am including a copy of my son's very large scholarship from a peer school. I am asking for an increase in the scholarship portion, not the need portion.
They also told me that outside scholarships would reduce a Perkins Loan dollar for dollar.

Can you post the results of what happens when you ask for more?

My son may be applying next year to RIT, and I'd like to hear what kind of packages people get from there.

@ Boondocks - we received $1K more for my wonderful letter I wrote! Not a ton, but I was not expecting much. they considered it an RIT grant as opposed to adding it to the scholarship amount. Not sure why except the scholarship is repeating, and I guess the grant does not have to be, although my daughter's grant repeated at the same amount all 4 years despite changes in our income.
