Laptop or desktop computer

Originally I was thinking of buying my son a laptop computer. I don't think he would need it to bring to classes but he wants one for email, surfing the web, games, etc. in the dorm if nothing else. But his current desktop computer is just fine so I'm wondering whether we really need to buy him a laptop. If desk space is a premium, I could just buy him a LCD monitor to replace his CRT but that's a lot cheaper than a whole new laptop.

Thoughts?

I suggest buying him a laptop. It is an investment in his education for at least four years, if you buy the right machine. My dad bought me a Macbook when I originally went off to school. The only advantage to having a laptop is its portability. I tended to not enjoy being stuck in my dorm room to write a seven page paper. So, I would pack my laptop and text books up and go to the coffee shop or to the library for a couple hours. Another example, I am sitting on my bed typing this out where as if I were stuck to a desktop I would be at my desk or in my home office. Anyways, I went to The University of Kansas for my freshman year and never really needed it for any in class work except for note taking in huge lecture halls. I think a laptop might be less necessary when I start over as a freshman at Roosevelt especially as an MT. Not to mention the cost difference..haha

ugh..i don't know if that was any help
