Hello all,

I originally applied for spring 2012 but i was rejected to SAS NB so i re-applied for fall 2012. I however did not take any courses during fall 2011 so another rejection was have expected(i was again rejected). I have taken courses in the spring and i now have new academic information. I finished my associates degree, i received two A in world civilization I, world civilization II, and a C+ in discrete mathematics. My GPA went from a 2.81 overall to a 2.90 and in terms of major gpa from a 2.88 to a 2.95. What are my chances of being reconsidered? The fact that i've applied twice and that i am appealing should show that i really want to go to rutgers new brunswick. Are there still any slots available or am i out of luck at this point for an appeal?

Why? I don't think my GPA is that bad and i am an in-state student who graduated from a NJ community college. I've seen much worse like my friend last spring who was rejected with a 2.5-2.6 but appealed and got accepted to his engineer major with new academic grades of two A, 1 B, 1 C+.

Is it my grades or the fact that Rutgers has already filled up all of their slots for incoming students?

To be honest you can appeal and see what happens. When did u get rejected? Did you send your spring 2012 transcript? Before u got

I would not say your chances "are slim to none", but I would apply again for sure. I think the class is pretty full so it would be hard for you to get in for Fall 2012. I have seen people get in with 2.9 GPA so it is possible. Call the school and find out what the appeal process is like and if that leads you to no where, try to apply again for the Spring of 2013. Don't give up hope if Rutgers is your 1st choice and remember that there are plenty of other good schools that will be happy to accept you. Good luck!!

I am saying your chances are slim NOT because of your GPA. It is very unlikely that a decision is overturned once it has been made.

I was rejected march 28th. I did not send my spring 2012 grades before the rejection since the semester was not over, the semester finished this month. My transcripts were sent early last week and they must have arrived over the weekend. I sent my transcript via fax so that also arrived last weekend. I called admission today and asked if they received everything correctly but the person wasn't helpful at all.

If they are not full then they may take you. The reason I think your chances are better now is because your degree is complete. I hope that info was included on your transcript.

I didn't look to see if Rutgers posts info, but I know that Rowan specifically states the order the apps are considered and those who received their Associates are considered first, then those w/60 credits, then on down the line. If they use the same process your chances might improve. I just don't know if it will work out for the fall.

A phone call to admissions wouldn't hurt. Try to speak to someone who actually knows something. If they sound uncertain ask to speak to somebody else. Simply say that this is very important to you and ask to speak to someone who would have more information. It might be tough though with the holiday coming and school just ending, lots of people on vacation......The fax you sent will not help because they don't accept anything that does not come direct from the school.

The number of students we can admit is determined by the number of spaces available at each school or college and the quality of the total applicant pool. These change from year to year and vary from college to college within the university.

Transfer students are expected to have completed specific required entrance subjects; if necessary, previous college courses may be used to satisfy high school course requirements.

What major are you applying for/what's your A.S. in?

You need to bare in mind that the difficulty to transfer in will depends on the school within Rutgers you are applying to. Your friend who transferred into engineering actually had an average gpa for the first two years of an engineering curriculum and there are a lot more slots available in the junior year of the engineering school because of the drop out rate.

If you are trying to transfer in as a psych major to SAS, for example, they probably have a glut of transfer applicants with higher GPAs.

I am applying for SAS and my major is Computer Science. My associates degree was an associates of science for the primary degree major of Science & Math - Computer Science.

Benjimon, I would probably go directly to Rutgers and speak with the dean if possible.

Benjimon, You are welcome to request reconsideration based on your spring grades but keep in mind that these requests rarely result in a changed decision. Please fax a letter along with your unofficial transcript to 732/445-0237 (Attention: Reconsideration Committee). Based on the GPA information you provided, it does not appear that this was the primary reason for our decision. Remember that we consider many other factors in addition to GPA such as strength of academic program, grade trends, whether or not your record includes many repeated courses, etc. For example, we do not admit students with weak and declining grades, regardless of how strong their GPA is.... For these students, it usually takes at least two consecutive full-time semesters of challenging coursework with strong grades before they could be competitive in our admissions process at Rutgers-NB. Most importantly, because we cannot make any promises about admission, you should have a back-up plan for this fall.

RUKnight do you have an estimate on when i should expect an update on my appeal in terms of denied/accepted? Also thank you for the information.

Benjimon, I have to be harshly honest with you, but even if you get accepted right now, those grades might reflect your future performance here. Trust me, the computer science classes at community college are NOTHING like the computer science classes here. If it was tough to achieve at least a B in CS classes at community college, it will be even harder to achieve at least a C in CS classes here. Take at least summer or one more semester's worth of courses to pull your grade up to a 3.0. That is my advice.
