2011 Honors Program

My son applied to this program last Dec. 1 for priority consideration. The website shows results will be in on March 1. So if anyone else hears anything and would like to share the news here, please do so.

Yet another waiting game!

Son just got an e-mail congratulating him for making it to the Honors Program!

Daughter just got the same e-mail !

Son got the email (made it to honors) afternoon of Feb 28th.

Still waiting for the Medical Scholars decisions.

For the Med. Scholars Program, will we receive an e-mail also - does anyone know?

rkay123 03-01-2011 08:36 PM

My son is also waiting for teh Med Scholars Decision.

Even if gets in the Med Scholars program, we now have second thoughts interms of teh rigidity of teh GPA you have to get each year. Any year you do not have 3.5 GPA (and 3.5 GPA in sciences), youo are out of the program. Ouch!

I think it is coming by mail for the Med Scholar. Apparently about 150 start in the program and in fall of sophomore there are 50 left and by senior year about 25-30 so yes it must be pretty rigourous for sure.

Pre-Law Scholars Program

My S applied for the Pre-Law Scholars back in January. Has anyone heard anything yet?

"Apparently about 150 start in the program and in fall of sophomore there are 50 left"

For sure those who were accepted into the Medical Scholars program are high academic achievers in high school. What did those 100 do then after they dropped out or changed their minds about the Medical Scholars program, Did most of them transfer out or continue studying in SLU? Any ideas?

I wouldn't worry about the decision for either of these. Last year I decided pretty late that I was going to attend SLU, applied after the deadline for two of the programs (pre-law scholars/Honors program), and both accepted me. I believe if you meet the criteria posted on the website you should be accepted.

As far as what those other students did, a lot of them just dropped that program, but stayed in the school. Many students decide after a year of study that becoming a doctor isn't what they really want to do with their lives. Others just wanted to focus their time elsewhere, and decided the extra work wasn't necessarily benefiting them in the way they had once hoped. (I can't speak from personal experience, just what a few of my friends have told me)

To answer the gpa thing: One semester slightly under 3.5 will likely only put you on probation in any of these programs. In fact, slightly may not even be the case, because one of my friends got around a 2.7 and was still only on probation, rather than being released from either premed scholars or honors (Again, this was not me in the situation, I'm just taking someone else's word for it).

Getting over a 3.5 shouldn't be that difficult for anyone here, so I wouldn't worry about it. I've found this school's curriculum to allow for a very good amount of socializing while still maintaining good grades.

Spartan2010,

Thanks for your replies, which provided a lots of useful info for someone who is going to have a Billiken soon. I was little disappointed that SLU's CC threads are not very active compared to others, perhaps people just does not care that much or just have no much ideas about SLU. Glad to see your posts, they are very helpful. Thanks again!
