aggravate vs. irritate

if in an "identify the error" question, and the word aggravate is used, but it really should be irritate, and that is the only thing that could be wrong, do we mark that as wrong or no error? i have come across some questions where it says do not use aggravate when you mean annoy, and some are no error. are these questions testing mostly grammar and not shades of meaning like aggravate vs irritate? please help!!!

Diction errors are tested occasionally on the Error ID questions of the SAT. However, "aggravate" vs. "irritate" is unlikely to show up because sources conflict on whether "aggravate" can be used to mean "irritate."
