Should I retake the SAT? (2270)

Hey guys,

I took the SAT for the first time in December of my Junior year -- I got a 780 in math, 770 in writing and 720 in reading. (combined score of 2270)

Since I have lots of time, I could retake it later in the year (after working on vocabulary and reading) and perhaps get a better score, but I run the risk of getting a worse score.

I'm looking at schools such as Duke, Georgetown, and John Hopkins, but I might consider applying to Harvard, Yale and other Ivies (both of my parents went to Yale law school).

Do you think I should risk it and retake it or does it look better to just take it once? Also, with my scores (and good grades, multiple APs and a relatively good set of EC's), do I have a chance of getting in an Ivy?

Thanks.

At least take it once more, just to see, you know. As for Ivies, there's not enough info to guess

if you think you can do better then retake it--if not don't. You certainly have a chance get into a lot of schools.

Thanks -- I think I can do better with enough prep but i'm just really worried that I will do worse (45% of scores go down)...

Even at Harvard, the average SAT score hovers between 2080 and 2370. Not everyone has perfect scores. I think you'd be fine if you didn't want to retake it, since you have over a 2200.

Of course, you could prep and bring the reading up... Don't stress out about it, whatever you decide to do. Coincidentally, CR and Writing are my strengths, while math is my weakness. I seem to be the opposite of many people here on CC.

My problem isn't the reading, but the vocabulary. And that's the hardest to study for since you have no idea what they are giving you -- still, I'll talk to my guidance councilor to figure it out after our break -- thanks for the advice.

A score of 2270 won't keep you out of anywhere, provided everything else on your application is equally impressive.

Why sylvan8798?

I think you should do some more practice tests and try to get above 2300.

With ivy league schools, you can never be too safe in a way.

Only take it if you are 100% sure that you can boost your score. Otherwise, your score is fine.

I would take it again, considering that it was your first attempt.
