Asking about the AOPS books

I'm wondering if the books are good for teaching you how to do a certain level of any kind of math or if the books are written ONLY for people that already know the math, but just helps them do well in competitions ONLY??

I'm speaking of The Art of Problem Solving books.

The books appear to highlight math concepts that may be missed in the normal high school curriculum of Alg-Geo-Alg2-Trig/PreCalc-Calc.

I thought they were a relative waste of time. AOPS edition 1 was too easy (mainly for like 8th/9th graders... if you get 800 SAT M, or even 750+, you will likely find this to be a review). AOPS edition 2 was too esoteric (and hard to an extent). Only useful if you are into contest math.
