Hey guys,

well my dad got some mail from the Yale Academy Sat Prep people talking about Sat classes that are 9 hours each. He is thinking of putting me into the classes. Are they worth it because they guarantee a 2200 or atleast a 400 point boost in your score. I dont believe it but my dad says it sounds legit and it will be helpful. So do you guys think it is good or bad? Please answer guys

Don't do it. Get a private tutor for hundreds of dollars less and you will do just as good.

People who teach prep classes don't have any "secret information" that you can't find in prep books. Get the Official Guide to the SAT ("blue book") and other prep books (I think Kaplan has good tips and is clearly written) and go through the practice tests. Sign up for the SAT Question of the Day on the College Board website. Getting very familiar with the test through lots of practice is the only thing that will raise your score.

(A lot of parents sign their kids up for classes just to give structure to practice time. If you don't have the self discipline to make yourself study at home, a class might be helpful. BTW, I wouldn't trust someone who "guarantees" a particular score. Not sure how they can make that "guarantee.")

The only difference between a prep class and a prep book is that at a class, you'll have someone staring you down, screaming at you if you need it, to get you practice in. But as said earlier, if you have the self-discipline (which most high school students should have but actually do not), an independent study with a book will serve the same purpose as a class.

At the end of the day, it's your future. If you personally feel that it will help you, then go ahead. Just remember that they will teach you nothing different from what you can get from any other source. (Library, online, friends, common sense...etc) I never got a tutor, and I personally made sure that I sat down everyday for 1 hour, and dedicated myself to a topic from a Princeton Review book. I managed to get my SAT from an 1880 to a 2300. In my opinion, you don't need someone else to tell you how to take a test. You already know it, all you have to do is understand it.

It sounds like a guarantee program. If you call them they probably guarantee you a 400 or the 2200. If your a person like me who needs that someone to push me Id probably go for it. I actually met the principal there and they are pretty nice people. But that was just my experience visiting the one in Upper Darby I can't give a say about the other locations though. But like parthiv said i feel like if you feel like it would help then go for it. It has several branches and when i checked the schedule earlier last week it seemed that over 50 people go there.
