IMPORTANT PSAT Question!

So, I'm a senior in high school and I am a semi-finalist for the National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Now, I took the SAT in January of my junior year...and they're asking to send in, if I took any SATs, immediately.

BUT, they also say we can take any SATs between December and October. So, can I wait until my October SAT to send it in?

Does your Jan score not meet the minimum required? I believe someone contacted the National Merit folks and asked what the needed cut-off score was, and I think it was around 1970. If you search the NMSF thread, you should find the answer.

Found the answer but don't know how to quote so will simply paste.

Qualifying SAT score to advance to NMF status
Hi all,

New member here and proud father of an NMSF in Idaho.

I talked to NMC today about how to determine what a qualifying SAT score for advancement to NMF status is.

The lady I spoke with said the formula was:

SAT M + SAT CR + (SAT W MC * 10) >= 1960

Where SAT M is SAT math score, SAT CR is SAT critical reading score, and SAT W MC is the SAT writing multiple choice score.

Hope this helps, and congratulations to all the NMSF's and proud parents!!!

A 1970??? That doesn't seem right...the National Merit foundation says that they want to see a SAT score that "confirms" your PSAT score...

I received a 2320 on my January test. But, I'm taking the next week so I wanted to give them the better of my two scores if possible.

Thanks for the reply!

Send the one you have now. If you retest send the new one as well.

Dont stress on this. There is no magic cutoff. Only 10 percent of semis dont make finalist, and those are mostly kids that took the ACT or otherwise lost interest in proceeding. Short of a total meltdown you will be in the run for the money.
