Is writing about personal experiences generally frowned upon when writing the essay?

For the materialism essay (May SAT), I used an example from current events, and then took one from personal experience. However, today, I was recently told that although they allow it, it's frowned upon. Is this true?

i dont think so...as long as you have good detail and sentence structure you should be fine...some ebooks even encourage that you use personal experiences because theyre easily made up so you can fit them in however youd like and its quicker to get out. Hope that helped.

I don't think so. I got a 11 and I only used personal examples.

If you are eloquent enough, personal examples can get you great scores. That said, it's better to use 1 personal and 1 literary or historical.
